87% of Stray Pets Have No Collar, Tag, or Microchip; SPCA Offers Free Microchipping Event on August 12

 

On August 5, SPCA Monterey County held a very successful free microchipping event that will help 141 pets be reunited with their families should they ever become lost. On August 12, the SPCA will host a 2nd free event to hopefully double that number. 

Every year, SPCA Monterey County rescues over one thousand stray dogs and cats. Sadly, 87% of those stray pets arrive with no form of identification - no collar, tag, or microchip - making it incredibly difficult to reunite them with their families. 

“It is heartbreaking to see a pet who is healthy and well-loved arrive with no identification,” says Ben Shaw, SPCA Shelter Manager. “We post their photos online and search through lost pet reports, but often no owner comes looking for them. If this free microchip event reunites even just one pet, it will be completely worth it.” 

A microchip is a small, electronic chip about the size of a grain of rice. It contains a unique identification number that is tied to your information.

In addition to microchips, the SPCA will also have free collars and tags available while supplies last. 

“Collars and tags are great at helping reunite pets quickly, but collars can slip off,” says Ben. “Many owners tell us they had just removed their pet’s collar when their pet went missing. By providing both microchips and collars, we hope more pets can be reunited with their families without even needing to come to shelters.”
