In early May, the SPCA Monterey County Wildlife Center celebrated after reuniting a baby Red-tailed hawk with her wild parents after she fell over 45 feet from her nest to the ground near California State University Monterey Bay. During the week of May 14 the SPCA rescued a Red-tailed Hawk again.
As you can see from the photos, the hawk grew significantly over the past few weeks. But she’s not quite ready to fly, and she still needs the care of her attentive parents.
Thankfully, the young hawk survived her first and second falls unscathed, but the nest did not fare well the second time and was destroyed. Thanks to our community’s support, we were here for her and her family. With the help from our friends at The Tree Man, we installed a heavy-duty nest made by our skilled wildlife rescue team, put it high in the tree where her old nest was, and placed her safely back. Her nest mate and parents returned immediately to check out their new, significantly improved nest.
We are hopeful that with this bigger, safer nest, there will be no more falls before they are ready to fly.
Thanks for your love that lets us be here for animals who need us....sometimes twice!
Salinas-based tree service company, The Tree Man, has helped the SPCA Wildlife Center renest Great Horned Owls, Red-tailed hawks, and Red-shouldered hawks who have nests too high for our ladders to reach.

Your support is extremely important to us, as we do not receive funding from any federal, state or local government agency. Each year, The SPCA Wildlife Center admits over 2,500 animals for treatment and care.
SPCA Monterey County is your nonprofit, independent, donor-supported humane society that has been serving the animals and people of Monterey County since 1905. The SPCA is not a chapter of any other agency and does not have a parent organization. They shelter homeless, neglected and abused pets and livestock, and provide humane education and countless other services to the community. They are the local agency you call to investigate animal cruelty, rescue and rehabilitate injured wildlife, and aid domestic animals in distress.
