Miss California Rodeo Salinas Contest Opens on February 14; Help Promote the Largest Rodeo in California

 

SALINAS, CA, February 9, 2023 – Young ladies who are passionate about the western lifestyle and promoting the rodeo industry can compete for the title of Miss California Rodeo Salinas 2023 this July. The winner will become an ambassador for the largest professional rodeo in California and enjoy traveling to parades, community celebrations and events during her reign. Entries for the 2023 contest open on February 14 and close May 1, 2023. The competition is open to young women between 18 and 24 years of age who are representing either a recognized horsemen's organization or another recognized non-commercial community organization.


The contest consists of horsemanship, personality & appearance, and scholarship categories; it starts Thursday, July 6th and Miss California Rodeo Salinas 2022 Mayson Bothwell and Rodeo President Fred Hooker will present the winner with her title on Saturday, July 8th. The winner will receive a $3,000 academic scholarship, a gold and silver trophy belt buckle and the use of a two-horse trailer for one year along with many other gifts and the privilege of wearing the Miss California Rodeo Salinas gold and silver tiara. Bothwell had this to say about her experience so far, “The time spent in the saddle as Miss California Rodeo Salinas 2022 has been extremely memorable. I’m so excited to leave with friends, memories, and relationships that I will cherish for the rest of my life. My favorite part as advocate for the sport of rodeo has been the community outreach. King City CHP is searching for person of interest who fled the scene of a fatal crash in Greenfield

On Monday, September 16 at approximately 3:50 pm, a fatal traffic collision occurred on Metz Road south of Elm Avenue in Greenfield.  The driver who caused the collision fled on foot and is currently outstanding.  The California Highway Patrol King City Area is currently seeking the whereabouts of 31-year-old Agustin Santana-Moncada of King City who has been identified as a person of interest in the case.  The King City Area is requesting assistance from the public in locating Santana-Moncada.  Anyone with information is asked to contact the King City Area office at (831) 385-3216.

Homicide of Inmate at Salinas Valley State Prison in Soledad Under Investigation

  APRIL 8, 2025 SOLEDAD, CA – California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation (CDCR) officials are investigating an alleged homicide of incarcerated person 36-year-old Joseph Mendoza which occurred on Tuesday night, April 8, 2025, at Salinas Valley State Prison (SVSP) in Soledad. At approximately 5:39 p.m., staff observed incarcerated persons 30-year-old Edgar Frayre and 32-year-old Nicolas Young attacking Joseph Mendoza with improvised weapons on the dayroom floor in Facility C. Staff immediately responded and issued several verbal commands to stop, which were ignored. Staff then deployed multiple less-than-lethal use-of-force options, which ultimately quelled the incident. Frayre and Young were secured in handcuffs. Medical aid was initiated for Mendoza; however, he was pronounced deceased at 6:10 p.m. Medical evaluations were conducted on Frayre and Young, and no serious injuries were reported.
