County of Monterey Broadband Speed Campaign is Underway; Residents Can Report Their Internet Speed to Improve the Broadband Service Map and Help Support Future Broadband Investment

Need high speed internet? Tell them about it.

Is your internet speed less than what you pay for or is internet service not available in your area?

Tell them about it.

High speed, high quality internet service is essential for modern life. The FCC has a new map

showing where broadband service is - and is not. But is everyone getting the service they are

entitled to?

Between now and January 13, 2023, please help Monterey County build an accurate picture of

locations without internet service. The County of Monterey Broadband Speed Campaign is

asking all residents to tell them about their internet speed at home, work, or wherever they connect.

Residents can check connectivity and service using a new Broadband Map consumer mapping

tool. If the reported service or speed is not available for purchase, you can submit a challenge to

correct the map.

The data collected will help:

• Identify areas of the county where homes and businesses lack high-speed internet

connection.

• Discover which households do not have an internet connection and the reasons why.

• Direct funds toward providing reliable broadband access throughout the county.

• Help us identify areas with the greatest need for internet speed by taking the Internet

Speed Test. (It only takes 60 seconds.)

• Help improve the accuracy of the FCC broadband map through direct community input.

This campaign includes everyone, whether you have excellent internet speeds or no access at all.

Here is how to report:

Go to: www.mcbroadbandforall.org

The website is available in both English and Spanish. The data collected will be used to submit

bulk challenges to the Federal Communications Commission and will be used to advocate for

resources necessary to close the digital divide.

If broadband service is not available in your area, you can visit any Monterey County Free

Library branch, and submit the information using the available public devices or call the County

of Monterey Broadband Challenge line at 831-647-7777.

On July 5, 2024, Parks staff noticed that dead baitfish, mostly shad, began washing up on the shore around Lake San Antonio and immediately contacted California Department of Fish and Wildlife (CDFW) to report the situation. At that time, the CDFW fisheries biologist stated the fish die off was most likely due to the high temperatures and low dissolved oxygen level in the water and that the situation most likely did not present a risk to the public. Parks staff also contacted the Water Resources Agency (WRA), State Water Resources Control Board and Environmental Health Bureau.   Unfortunately, the fish die off has continued with larger species such as bass, catfish, crappie, carp, and trout being impacted. Attached photos include a 3–4-pound bass.   CDFW, WRA and EHB are working together to try to determi
