Man Arrested for Homicide Shooting in Greenfield on October 29

On Saturday, October 29 at about 9:30 A.M., Greenfield officers responded to a victim of a shooting on the 50 block of 4th Street.  Officers located 20-year-old Ramiro Silva Martin suffering from multiple gunshot wounds and was transported to Natividad Medical Center in Salinas. Unfortunately, Silva was pronounced deceased shortly after arrival.

Greenfield, Soledad, and South Monterey County Task Force detectives, along with Crime Scene Investigators, were called in and took over the investigation, which consisted of processing physical evidence, reviewing city, business, and residential home security cameras, and speaking to witnesses. Through the investigation, a suspect was identified.

About 2 hours later, at 11:30 A.M., the suspect, 20-year-old, Jaime Cerna, of Greenfield, was located at Mee Memorial Hospital with a stab wound to the leg and taken into custody.

The stab wound was consistent with what witnesses stated occurred on scene and other evidence that put Cerna at the scene. Cerna was booked into the Monterey County Jail for homicide.

Detectives continued their investigation, serving a warrant at Cerna’s home on the 50 block of Moreno Street; detectives located a 9mm semiautomatic firearm, which is believed to be the murder weapon, along with ammunition and a loaded extended magazine.

Through the Greenfield PD's investigation, it was learned that Cerna was a Norteño gang member from Greenfield, and it appears that the shooting was gang related.

Although Cerna was taken into custody, detectives are still seeking assistance from our community members who may have information. You can call the WeTip line at 1-800-782-7463 (1-800-78-CRIME), or the Greenfield Police Department at 831-385-8311.  You can remain anonymous.

The Greenfield Police Department thanks the Monterey County Sheriff's Office, the CHP - King City, and King City Police Department for their initial response and assistance on the scene.

Lake San Antonio Closed Due to Large Scale Fish Die Off; Number of Fish Impacted is Increasing and Reason for Die Off Remains Unknown

July 9, 2024- Out of abundance of caution for public health, County of Monterey Parks is closing the Lake San Antonio facility due to a large-scale fish die off from an unknown cause. On July 5, 2024, Parks staff noticed that dead baitfish, mostly shad, began washing up on the shore around Lake San Antonio and immediately contacted California Department of Fish and Wildlife (CDFW) to report the situation. At that time, the CDFW fisheries biologist stated the fish die off was most likely due to the high temperatures and low dissolved oxygen level in the water and that the situation most likely did not present a risk to the public. Parks staff also contacted the Water Resources Agency (WRA), State Water Resources Control Board and Environmental Health Bureau.   Unfortunately, the fish die off has continued with larger species such as bass, catfish, crappie, carp, and trout being impacted. Attached photos include a 3–4-pound bass.   CDFW, WRA and EHB are working together to try t...
