Hartnell Road Bridge Replacement Project South of Salinas Begins July 5, 2022

Construction work on the Hartnell Road Bridge Replacement Project will begin on July 5, 2022. The

bridge replacement will require the closure of Hartnell Road approximately 400 feet west of Alisal

Road, just south of the City of Salinas, for the duration of the work.

The project is expected to take eight months and be completed in February 2023. A new bridge will be

built, and the existing bridge will be removed. The new bridge and roadway approaches will provide

two 12-foot lanes and 8-foot shoulders. Most of the road work is expected to be done during the day

between the hours of 7:00 AM and 5:00 PM.

A detour plan (see next page) will be in place to advise motorist of road closure and suggest alternate

routes. Monterey County Public Works will make every effort to keep the community updated on the

progress of the work and any additional changes to the traffic patterns. Please visit our Current Major

Projects page for updates and/or more information (such as the detour plan):

Administration (FHWA), Highway Bridge Program (HBP), State Toll Credits and Measure X funds.

On July 5, 2024, Parks staff noticed that dead baitfish, mostly shad, began washing up on the shore around Lake San Antonio and immediately contacted California Department of Fish and Wildlife (CDFW) to report the situation. Parks staff also contacted the Water Resources Agency (WRA), State Water Resources Control Board and Environmental Health Bureau.   Unfortunately, the fish die off has continued with larger species such as bass, catfish, crappie, carp, and trout being impacted. Attached photos include a 3–4-pound bass.   CDFW, WRA and EHB are working together to try t...
