During the week of June 12, the South Monterey County Taskforce became aware of a Greenfield resident who was using social media to purchase fentanyl M30 pills. These are the same type of pills that are responsible for many overdoses in South Monterey County. The Greenfield PD began they investigation, and identified a subject as a 20-year-old from Greenfield.
On Tuesday evening, June 21 the Greenfield and Soledad Police Departments served a warrant on the 20-year-old’s house. Officers located multiple fentanyl pills in the man's bedroom and on his person. He was taken into custody.
During an interview with detectives, the 20-year-old admitted to struggling with addiction, understood the dangers of fentanyl pills, and requested substance abuse intervention; Greenfield Police will be referring the 20-year-old to drug court services as it is their goal to help anyone struggling with this disease, and for that reason, the identity of the 20-year-old is being withheld.
Fentanyl is an illegal drug that is over 50 times stronger then morphine, and often times mixed (“laced”) with other drugs such as marijuana, cocaine, meth, and heroin. The community of Greenfield has been fortunate to not have lost any lives to this drug, but Soledad and other cities in South Monterey County have lost teenagers and young adults to overdoses.
Greenfield Police Officers will continue to take a proactive and “zero tolerance” approach when it comes to gangs and drugs that affect the community and the safety of youth.
There are many alcohol and substance abuse interventions available in the County. For more information, visit Monterey County’s Alcohol and Substance Use Support and Treatment website at:
