2 People Taken Into Custody Involving Sideshow that led to Battery and Vehicle Chase in Monterey County on June 24

The Monterey County Sheriff's Office reports that at 10 pm on Friday night, June 24 over 75 community members in the Las Palmas area said that 40 to 50 vehicles were racing, doing donuts in the roadway, blocking exits and setting off fireworks. Community members began to confront the reckless drivers and 2 residents were battered. One of the victims was able to get the plate number of the car the suspect was in as 8 deputies arrived in the area and the group began to disperse. The suspected vehicle information was given to the Salinas Police Department as the Sheriff’s Office began to coordinate with them since the group went into the city. The car was located and the battery suspect was arrested.

The group again blocked roadways and recklessly drove at two different locations over the next hour. This led to the Sheriff’s Office being involved in a pursuit of one of the vehicles on North Main at Russell Road. The pursuit went down North Main at speeds of 95 MPH and the vehicle was lost by deputies chasing it.

CHP located a vehicle matching the description on Old Stage Road and Zabala coming towards Salinas. The CHP alerted the Sheriff’s Office and asked for assistance. 3 deputies and a supervisor responded and when they attempted to the stop the vehicle it fled southbound on Alisal Road.

It eventually got onto southbound 101 from Spence road where it continued to flee at speeds of over 100 MPH. Deputies pursued it to the City of Gonzales before it was lost again.

The Sheriff’s Office coordinated with Greenfield Police Officers though to watch the residence where it belonged to and eventually the driver arrived back at the home and a 17 year old male was arrested off of Hicks Drive for felony reckless evading.

The Monterey County Sheriff's Office reminds people that as a reminder, if you see these types of reckless incidents, please be their eyes and ears and call them. Please do not confront the suspects and endanger yourselves and your family. The Sheriff's Office will respond and handle the incident safely.

On July 5, 2024, Parks staff noticed that dead baitfish, mostly shad, began washing up on the shore around Lake San Antonio and immediately contacted California Department of Fish and Wildlife (CDFW) to report the situation. At that time, the CDFW fisheries biologist stated the fish die off was most likely due to the high temperatures and low dissolved oxygen level in the water and that the situation most likely did not present a risk to the public. Parks staff also contacted the Water Resources Agency (WRA), State Water Resources Control Board and Environmental Health Bureau.   Unfortunately, the fish die off has continued with larger species such as bass, catfish, crappie, carp, and trout being impacted. Attached photos include a 3–4-pound bass.   CDFW, WRA and EHB are working together to try to determi
