On March 31, 2021, at approximately 1:06 am police officers from the King City Police Department responded to a report of gun shots fired in the area of 60 Broadway Circle. Upon arrival, officers located an adult male on the ground who had sustained multiple gunshot wounds. The victim, who was identified as 31-year-old Miguel Angel Aviles of King City, CA, succumbed to injuries consistent with gun violence. The King City PD's investigation revealed that the victim was in the area of Broadway Circle and River Drive when he got into an altercation with a subject. Evidence was collected at the scene as well as from the surrounding areas.
On April 16, 2021, members of the King City Police Department with assistance from the Monterey County Sheriff’s Office served a search warrant on the 200 block of Oxford Avenue in King City. While serving the search warrant a 15-year-old resident was arrested and charged with the murder of Miguel Angel Aviles. The juvenile suspect was booked into Monterey County Juvenile Hall. Although an arrest was made the investigation into the homicide investigation was ongoing.
On October 21, 2021, in furtherance of this homicide investigation, members of the King City Police Department with assistance from the Salinas Police Department and California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation Salinas Valley State Prison served a search warrant on the 200 block of Sussex Way in King City after identifying an additional suspect related to this homicide investigation. While serving the search warrant a 16-year-old resident was arrested and charged with the murder of Miguel Angel Aviles. The juvenile was booked into Monterey County Juvenile Hall. Lake San Antonio Closed Due to Large Scale Fish Die Off; Number of Fish Impacted is Increasing and Reason for Die Off Remains Unknown
July 9, 2024- Out of abundance of caution for public health, County of Monterey Parks is closing the Lake San Antonio facility due to a large-scale fish die off from an unknown cause. On July 5, 2024, Parks staff noticed that dead baitfish, mostly shad, began washing up on the shore around Lake San Antonio and immediately contacted California Department of Fish and Wildlife (CDFW) to report the situation. At that time, the CDFW fisheries biologist stated the fish die off was most likely due to the high temperatures and low dissolved oxygen level in the water and that the situation most likely did not present a risk to the public. Parks staff also contacted the Water Resources Agency (WRA), State Water Resources Control Board and Environmental Health Bureau.
