United Way of Monterey County to Launch the 11th Annual Stuff the Bus School Supply Drive at Fairgrounds in King City

Monterey, CA – United Way Monterey County (UWMC) will launch the 11th annual Stuff the Bus school supply drive on Saturday, June 5 at the King City Fairgrounds in King City, CA. Sponsored by the Rotary Club of King City and hosted by UWMC, this kickoff event will occur between 9:00 a.m. and 12:00 Noon, with opening remarks scheduled between 9:00 a.m. and 9:30 a.m. from: • Oscar Avalos, President Rotary Club of King City • Katy Castagna, President & CEO UWMC • Dr. Donna Smith, Program Director, Homeless Children and Youth Services Program, MCOE • Dr. Deneen Guss, Monterey County Superintendent of Schools “When looking for a grant project, our Rotary Club realized that the Covid-19 pandemic was making purchasing school supplies harder for families who were already having financial difficulties. In partnership with the Rotary Club of Gonzales, we were awarded $5,000. With this grant, we can provide the students with the supplies they need to succeed in school,” said, Oscar Avalos, President of the Rotary Club of King City. “We look forward to not only helping monetarily but volunteering to prepare the backpacks on June 5th. I’ve personally helped with Stuff the Bus in the past and I am excited to once again partner with an organization like United Way,” added Oscar Avalos. UWMC, in partnership with Monterey County Office of Education (MCOE), administers the annual Stuff the Bus program, providing new school supplies to the large population of students living in homeless or near homeless conditions in Monterey County. Before the academic year starts, backpacks containing binders, paper, notebooks, pens, pencils, crayons, and other necessities will be delivered to students by Homeless Liaisons in each school district. “2020 school data indicates there are nearly 10,000 local students experiencing housing instability. It costs only $25 to provide a fully stuffed backpack for a student in need. Stuff the Bus will help ease the burden of additional costs for families. More importantly, it will ensure these students start school with the tools they need to learn," said Katy Castagna, President and CEO, UWMC. UWMC will continue to modify the Stuff the Bus program this year to comply with physical distancing protocols and will eliminate collection sites for school supplies. Monetary donations are requested instead to purchase new school supplies that will be distributed through the schools. Additionally, volunteer participation will be limited to ensure health and safety of all program participants. UWMC is accepting donations for Stuff the Bus through our website. For more information about the Stuff the Bus program, contact Lynda Patrick, Vice President, Resource Development, by email at Lynda.Patrick@UnitedWayMCCA.org or at (831) 372-8026, ext. 112. July 9, 2024- Out of abundance of caution for public health, County of Monterey Parks is closing the Lake San Antonio facility due to a large-scale fish die off from an unknown cause. On July 5, 2024, Parks staff noticed that dead baitfish, mostly shad, began washing up on the shore around Lake San Antonio and immediately contacted California Department of Fish and Wildlife (CDFW) to report the situation. At that time, the CDFW fisheries biologist stated the fish die off was most likely due to the high temperatures and low dissolved oxygen level in the water and that the situation most likely did not present a risk to the public. Parks staff also contacted the Water Resources Agency (WRA), State Water Resources Control Board and Environmental Health Bureau.   Unfortunately, the fish die off has continued with larger species such as bass, catfish, crappie, carp, and trout being impacted. Attached photos include a 3–4-pound bass.   CDFW, WRA and EHB are working together to try to determi
