FORT HUNTER LIGGETT, Calif. – Fort Hunter Liggett Directorate of Family & Morale, Welfare and Recreation (DFMWR) will host the 18th annual Youth Fishing Derby for ages 15 and younger on Saturday, April 24, 2021 at Del Venturi Reservoir.
DFMWR will stock the reservoir with about 1,700 pounds of rainbow trout.
Children up to age 15 from FHL and surrounding communities are invited and will not need a fishing permit. When the derby ends, the pond will be open for everyone who has a California fishing license. No FHL fishing permit will be needed April 24 and 25
“My Intent is to provide a safe fun-filled morning celebrating the Month of the Military Child,” said Garrison Commander Col. Charles Bell. “It is also an excellent opportunity for youth who have never been fishing before.”
Registration is required for participation and begins at 6:30 a.m. The derby ends at noon. There is a limit of five fish per youth, and 1st, 2nd and 3rd place prizes will be given for the biggest fish caught by categories.
Breakfast and lunch will be available for purchase (cash only) the day of the event. Fishing poles and a limited amount of bait will be provided for up to 150 youth. Participants are encouraged to bring their own bait.

Lake San Antonio Closed Due to Large Scale Fish Die Off; Number of Fish Impacted is Increasing and Reason for Die Off Remains Unknown
July 9, 2024- Out of abundance of caution for public health, County of Monterey Parks is closing the Lake San Antonio facility due to a large-scale fish die off from an unknown cause. On July 5, 2024, Parks staff noticed that dead baitfish, mostly shad, began washing up on the shore around Lake San Antonio and immediately contacted California Department of Fish and Wildlife (CDFW) to report the situation. At that time, the CDFW fisheries biologist stated the fish die off was most likely due to the high temperatures and low dissolved oxygen level in the water and that the situation most likely did not present a risk to the public. Parks staff also contacted the Water Resources Agency (WRA), State Water Resources Control Board and Environmental Health Bureau.
