Supervisor Lopez and California Water Service Lend a Helping Hand to Local Families for a 2nd Year in a Row

Most Thanksgivings, families come together to share a meal and enjoy time together, this year may look a little different in many households. With the added stress and uncertainty of Covid-19, District 3 Monterey County Supervisor Chris Lopez and California Water Service want to help alleviate just a little bit of that anxiety for local families. In partnership with California Water Service, Supervisor Chris Lopez is taking this opportunity to lift just a little bit of that stress. Working through local schools and non-profits, they are honored to be distributing care packages that include a turkey voucher from California Water Service, and a matching gift card to help put together all the trimmings that families need to gather around and enjoy a wonderful dinner. Supervisor Lopez stated, “The need in our community this year has been exacerbated by the economic challenges, health challenges and natural disasters that have impacted our entire state this year. Making this holiday a little easier for our families is our goal this holiday season. In South County, we always look out for one another and this is just another small way to keep that spirit alive.” “At Cal Water, we’re more than just a water utility; we’re part of the communities we serve. This year more than ever, we are proud to join forces with Supervisor Lopez and other community partners to help our neighbors in need and make the holidays a little happier for their families,” said Local Cal Water Manager Marc Bloom. 25 care packages were delivered to several local schools in Southern Monterey County who assisted in selecting and distributing them to families. Some of those organizations include: San Ardo Elementary School, San Lucas Elementary School, La Gloria Elementary School in Gonzales, El Gavilan Elementary School in Soledad, Arroyo Seco Academy in Greenfield, Del Rey Elementary School in King City, and Chualar Elementary School. Paid for by Chris Lopez for Supervisor 2022 FPPFC# 1400664, no government funding or resources were used for this effort.

On July 5, 2024, Parks staff noticed that dead baitfish, mostly shad, began washing up on the shore around Lake San Antonio and immediately contacted California Department of Fish and Wildlife (CDFW) to report the situation. At that time, the CDFW fisheries biologist stated the fish die off was most likely due to the high temperatures and low dissolved oxygen level in the water and that the situation most likely did not present a risk to the public. Parks staff also contacted the Water Resources Agency (WRA), State Water Resources Control Board and Environmental Health Bureau.   Unfortunately, the fish die off has continued with larger species such as bass, catfish, crappie, carp, and trout being impacted. Attached photos include a 3–4-pound bass.   CDFW, WRA and EHB are working together to try to determi
