SALINAS, California- Monterey County District Attorney Jeannine M. Pacioni announced on Wednesday, July 22 that Ramon Curiel pled guilty to the attempted murder of Gonzales Police Department Corporal Brian Solis.
On June 10, 2019 during a routine field interview, Corporal Solis observed objective signs Curiel was under the influence of a controlled substance. When Corporal Solis tried to detain him to investigate, Curiel fled and led a foot pursuit through Gonzales. As the pursuit continued on Alta Street, Corporal Solis noticed Curiel reaching near his waistband and discharged his Taser. Simultaneously, Curiel turned around and fired a handgun once at Corporal Solis but missed. Curiel continued fleeing but was arrested a short time later hiding in the brush several blocks away.
Curiel pled guilty to attempted second degree murder, being a felon in possession of a firearm, concealing an unregistered firearm, and admitted an enhancement for personal use of a firearm. On Wednesday, August 19 Judge Pamela Butler will sentence Curiel to 22 years and 8 months in prison. In Addition, Curiel's attempted murder on a police officer conviction qualifies as a “super strike” under California’s Three Strikes Law.
This case was investigated by District Attorney Investigators Jackie Meroney, George Costa, Jennifer Mendoza, Martin Sanchez, Kris Hunsaker, Erik Morris, and Jose Lopez.
