Gonzales Police Sergeant Melgoza, Officer Cordoba, CSO Fierros and Gonzales Police Chief Keith Wise had the opportunity on Wednesday, June 17 to hang out with some of the Gonzales youth at the Gonzales Skatepark that had just recently been reopened. They surprised a few kids who didn't have skateboards or helmets and gave them free ones. They also provided some free masks to those who didn't have one.
They used this as an opportunity to engage and connect with their youth and discuss Skatepark safety and COVID-19 topics such as maintaining social distancing, wearing face coverings and frequent hand washing. The Skatepark had been temporarily closed for about 4 months due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
During the closure Police Chief Wise was contacted frequently by kids asking, “Hey Chief, when are you guys going to open up the skatepark?" Police Chief Wise felt bad for the kids and wanted to do something special for them.
Wednesday, June 17 was the 3rd day of the park being open so, Police Chief Wise reached into his wallet and went out and purchased about 5 Skateboards and surprised the kids with the skateboards, helmets and some other cool police swag.
