Monterey County Board of Supervisors Approves Additional Funds for Food Bank County support for agency now totals more than half a million dollars
One of the most visible impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic in Monterey County is the increasing need for food by residents throughout each community.
The Food Bank for Monterey County continues to be on the front line of getting these important supplies to locals in need, and Tuesday, April 21 the Monterey County Board of Supervisors approved an additional $250,000 in financial support for the Food Bank.
This brings the total support provided by the county for the Food Bank to $500,000 in just the last month. $250,000 was approved on March 24.
“It is clear that the need for basic support like food is only increasing as the economic impacts of the pandemic continue, so it’s critical we continue to support agencies like the Food Bank, which is meeting basic needs for many,” says John Phillips, Monterey County 2nd District Supervisor. “I urge other entities and businesses to consider supporting this effort - the Food Bank is feeding our constituents and workforce, supporting them through this difficult time.”
Monterey County already provides modest annual support for the Food Bank of $60,000; the monies which have been approved by the Board are in addition to those funds and is being taken from the County’s cannabis tax revenue account.
The Food Bank continues to see long lines and increased requests for food for people of all ages and from all areas of the county. Their efforts to provide include working at school sites to provide staples and produce for families whose children receive take and go lunches, operating drive-through and seniors-only sites.
