While Monterey County has no confirmed cases of COVID-19 Novel Coronavirus, County Administrative Officer Charles J. McKee issued a proclamation of a local emergency today, Friday, March 6, 2020.
This proclamation is a precautionary measure, which will help the County mobilize and coordinate resources should the virus be detected here.
Monterey County Health Officials have been monitoring the virus outbreak since last year and actively preparing for such an emergency. In addition, the Monterey County Operation Area Emergency Operations Center has already activated to Level 3 – its lowest level – to support the Health Department and local health partners.
Local preparation includes coordinating with local health partners including hospitals, urgent care centers, medical providers, laboratorians, and medical first responders as well as cities, agencies and community partners. The County’s Public Health Laboratory is now able to test for coronavirus, which allows for faster results regarding patients who may meet the criteria for testing.
As the County prepares, all residents can do their part to help reduce the spread of respiratory illnesses like COVID-19 by using flu prevention measures such as handwashing and disinfecting frequently touches surfaces and objects.
