First Death of Coronavirus reported in Monterey County



On Saturday, March 21 the first death of a Monterey County resident due to complications from COVID-19 was reported to the Monterey County Health Department. The adult individual was hospitalized and had an underlying health condition. The Health Department expresses its sincere condolences to the family and friends. No additional information about this individual is being released to protect the family’s privacy at this very difficulty time.

“This is a tragic development. The Monterey County Health Department is taking necessary, carefully considered steps to slow down the spread of the disease and to protect those at greatest risk,” said Dr. Edward Moreno, Monterey County Health Officer and Director of Public Health. “We are facing a historic public health challenge and know this is a very difficult time. Our top priority continues to be protecting the health of our community.”

 There have now been 14 confirmed cases of COVID-19 among Monterey County residents, at least 2 of which appear to have been acquired locally.  It is critical that individuals and organizations continue to take actions to slow the spread of the virus by following all applicable guidance and recommendations from the Monterey County Health Department including the County Health Officer Shelter in Place Order.

The Monterey County Health Department continues to work closely with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the California Department of Public Health, and our local partners as the COVID-19 pandemic continues to evolve.

Attempted Homicide Shooting Incident in King City on September 29

  The King City Police Department received a report of gunshots heard in the area of the 600 block of Sycamore Street at around 1 am on Sunday, September 29. While enroute, the King City PD was advised that 2 victims were transported to Mee Memorial Hospital by private vehicle to be treated for gunshot wounds.   Upon arrival, officers were told that a single unknown suspect opened the gate to a fenced yard and fired 10 rounds into a crowd attending a party. 2 individuals were struck by the gunfire, after-which the suspect fled on foot.  The suspect was described as wearing a dark colored hoodie and pants. The 2 victims are a 16-year-old juvenile male who was shot 3 times and an 18-year-old male who was shot 1 time.  Both victims were transported to Natividad Hospital from Mee Memorial and are currently listed in stable condition. 3 Vehicle Wreck on Highway 101 Outside of King City on December 26

  A 3 vehicle accident happened on Highway 101 Northbound near the Central Avenue exit outside of King City at 12:07 pm on Thursday afternoon, December 26. One of the vehicles overturned as a result of the crash. Minor injuries were reported from the collision.
