King City man busted for making a false report of a hostage situation

On February 24, 2020, at around 7:39 am, Monterey County Communications received a 9-1-1 call reporting that 4 to 6 subjects armed with rifles had entered a residence located at 101 River Drive #21 in King City. The caller also stated that the armed subjects were holding the residents of unit #21 hostage and a grey or silver colored newer model Honda Accord was also involved. Police personnel from the King City Police Department immediately responded to the reported emergency requesting mutual aid assistance from the Monterey County Sheriff’s Office and the California Highway Patrol. As police personnel arrived at River Drive and began to establish a perimeter to address the emergency a silver colored Honda Accord was seen leaving the scene.
Police personnel continued to maintain the perimeter and address the reported emergency at unit #21 while also shadowing the Honda Accord as it left the area until enough units were available to initiate an enforcement stop. A high-risk enforcement stop, due to the nature of the reported emergency, was conducted on the Honda in the parking lot at the corner of Canal Street and Broadway Street at which time the 2 occupants of the Honda were contacted at gunpoint and subsequently detained. At approximately the same time police personnel contacted the occupants of unit #21 and determined the reported emergency was false and had not occurred. The detained occupants of the Honda were subsequently released.
Upon determining the reported emergency was a hoax and misuse of the 9-1-1 emergency telephone system an investigation was initiated to determine who made the 9-1-1 telephone call reporting the false emergency. As a result of the police investigation Irvin Rodriguez, a 28-year-old male resident of King City, Ca, was identified as a suspect and subsequently admitted his involvement in the crime. Rodriguez indicated he was calling the police because cars were driving in his neighborhood and he believed if he said people with guns were involved the police would come faster.
The King City Police Department has submitted their investigation into the incident to the Monterey County District Attorney’s Office requesting the following charges to be filed against Irvin Rodriguez for violations of California law:
• 1 Count - Penal Code 148.3(a) - Any individual who reports, or causes any report to be made, to any city, county, city and county, or state department, district, agency, division, commission, or board, that an “emergency” exists, knowing that the report is false.
• 1 Count – Penal Code 653x(a) - A person who telephones or uses an electronic communication device to initiate communication with the 911 emergency system with the intent to annoy or harass another person
The King City Police Department assures the members of its community it will work diligently to investigate all crimes committed within the city limits and seek criminal charges as appropriate to ensure for the ongoing safety of its residents. The King City Police Department would like to thank the California Highway Patrol and Monterey County Sheriff’s Office for their assistance during this incident and investigation.

July 9, 2024- Out of abundance of caution for public health, County of Monterey Parks is closing the Lake San Antonio facility due to a large-scale fish die off from an unknown cause. On July 5, 2024, Parks staff noticed that dead baitfish, mostly shad, began washing up on the shore around Lake San Antonio and immediately contacted California Department of Fish and Wildlife (CDFW) to report the situation. At that time, the CDFW fisheries biologist stated the fish die off was most likely due to the high temperatures and low dissolved oxygen level in the water and that the situation most likely did not present a risk to the public. Parks staff also contacted the Water Resources Agency (WRA), State Water Resources Control Board and Environmental Health Bureau.   Unfortunately, the fish die off has continued with larger species such as bass, catfish, crappie, carp, and trout being impacted. Attached photos include a 3–4-pound bass.   CDFW, WRA and EHB are working together to try to determi
