SALINAS, Calif. —U.S. health officials are advising people to stay away from romaine lettuce that is grown in Salinas, as they look into a food poisoning outbreak.
They also mention that you should not eat the leafy green if the label doesn’t indicate where it was grown.
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration is searching for the cause of an E. coli outbreak that has made 40 people sick in more than a dozen states.
Romaine lettuce has been connected to repeated food poisoning outbreaks, including one before Thanksgiving in 2018. There are still no clear cut clues as to exactly why romaine lettuce continues to make people sick, but food safety experts state that the difficulty of eliminating risk for produce grown in open fields and eaten raw.
The FDA reports that its inquiry has led investigators to farms in Salinas and that they're searching for the contamination source.
