Monterey County Areas Impacted by Power Shutoff to be Re-energized

PG&E has confirmed that areas in Monterey County that were impacted by the Public Safety Power Shutoff will be re-energized in the next 24 hours. Residents and businesses who don’t see the power come back on by Monday evening, October 28 can expect power on Tuesday, October 29.

Here are some good steps and precautions to take in advance of the power returning:
• Turn off or disconnect appliances, equipment, or electronics. Power may return with momentary “surges” or “spikes” that can cause damage.
• Wells need to be inspected if the power is out for 12 hours or more. If you are served by an individual well or community well system, please contact the Monterey County Health Department, Environmental Health Bureau at (831) 755-4505 or sws@co.monterey.ca.us for more information.
• When in doubt, throw it out! Throw away any food that has been exposed to temperatures 40 degrees or higher for two hours or more, or that has an unusual odor, color, or texture.
• If your medication requires refrigeration it may be compromised, contact your pharmacist or doctor for further instructions.
• Check on your neighbors and loved ones. Older adults and young children are especially vulnerable to extreme temperatures.
• For businesses that handle food, before reopening your facility, you must throw out all food that was held above 41° F for more than 2 hours. Document the type, amount of food and reason for disposal for insurance and regulatory purposes. To discard large volumes of food, contact your refuse disposal company or your local landfill operator for disposal instructions. You must also make sure that electricity and gas services have been restored, all circuit breakers have been properly reset as needed, any boil water notices are followed, and all equipment is operating properly. If your facility was closed by the Environmental Health Department, it must remain closed until you obtain approval from the Environmental Health Department to reopen.
