On Monday, August 19, at around 1:49 PM, 24-year-old Jorge Luis Gonzalez of Bakersfield was driving a Peterbuilt truck trailer southbound on US-101 south of Santa Barbara Road in Atascadero which was loaded with 79,000 pounds of rocks when the rear tire on the trailer went flat. Gonzalez pulled to the right shoulder and stopped, exited his vehicle and walked back to the trailer. However, Gonzalez saw the rear tire start smoking, so he went back to his truck to retrieve his fire extinguisher and as he walked back to the tire, a small fire started and had jumped to the shoulder. Gonzalez tried to put the fire out with his fire extinguisher, but was unable to keep up with the growing fire. Fire crews from multiple agencies responded to battle the fire, while the Templeton CHP and Cal Trans closed southbound US-101. The Atascadero Police Department also assisted with diverting the Southbound traffic to El Camino Real, east of US-101. The #1 lane of US-101 was re-opened a short time later, but the #2 lane was closed for at least 5 hours.
