Atascadero man found guilty of evading an Officer & DUI

Monterey County District Attorney Jeannine M. Pacioni announced on Thursday, August 29 that a jury found 43-year-old Robin Guzman of Atascadero, guilty of felony evading a peace officer with wanton disregard for safety, driving under the influence of alcohol, and found true an enhancement for driving with a blood alcohol level of 0.08% or greater. Judge Rafael Vazquez presided over the 4-day jury trial.
On April 28, 2018, Guzman was speeding on Highway 101 southbound approaching the Gonzales off-ramp. Deputy Abel Munoz of the Monterey County Sheriff’s Office turned on his lights and sirens to stop him. Guzman did not pull over. Between the Gonzales off-ramp and the 5th Street off-ramp, Guzman straddled the number one and two lanes at high rates of speed causing the vehicles in front of him to veer off the road to avoid being hit. He did this again between the 5th Street off-ramp and the Gloria Road off-ramp, causing two more vehicles to veer off the road to avoid a collision. Guzman reached speeds of over 130 mph during the pursuit. The Sheriff’s Office terminated the pursuit due to safety concerns just south of Gloria Road. Guzman eventually crashed his vehicle and was apprehended.
California Highway Patrol Officer Michael DePedrini responded to conduct a DUI investigation. Guzman was a 0.161% blood alcohol level an hour after driving and a 0.14% blood alcohol level over two hours after driving.
This case was investigated by Monterey County Sheriff Deputy Abel Munoz and California Highway Patrol Officer Michael DePedrini.
When Guzman is sentenced on September 23, he faces up to 3 years in state prison for evading and 6 months in the Monterey County Jail for driving under the influence of alcohol.
