SVF Extends Deadline for Some Contests

Image result for Salinas Valley Fair

KING CITY, CA— There’s still time to enter most Salinas Valley Fair competitions. Once again, Salinas Valley Fair officials extended their deadline for all non-livestock entries to Friday, April 19th. There is a catch – you have to enter using the fair’s online entry system! The fair first started tracking entries with a computer database in 1977 when they hired the Bates-Bowers company to manage all of the data received from the paper entry forms.  Cutting edge for the time.  Now, nearly  thirty-five years later, the fair has a partnership with a web based entry system that allows for exhibitors to directly input their entries to the database.   The computerized efficiencies allows the fair to manage over 8,000 entries with half the number of staff. Hundreds of people have made the switch to entering their crafts, jams, photography, school projects and quilts using the fair’s website.  When using the website to enter projects, remember to have your credit card handy and know the competition division and class.  “Entering online can be a bit intimidating for those unfamiliar with the process,” said Jean Grainger, Salinas Valley Fair Still Exhibits Coordinator.  “I enjoy helping our exhibitors through the process or any challenges they’re having so that we ensure their exhibits are on display during our 75th Salinas Valley Fair in May”. With over 300 competitions for all ages in baked goods, arts, crafts, home arts, photography and more there is bound to be a competition to show off your talent or your child’s works.  Ms. Grainger is hopeful photographers will participate in the special State Parks Photography Competition and that local quilters will consider entering the special Veteran’s Quilt Challenge.  All items made in the Veteran’s Quilt Challenge will be donated to local veterans. To see all available categories, view the entry guidebook and to enter online visit www.SalinasValleyFair.com and choose the ‘Fair Competitions’ tab. For information or online entry assistance contact the entry office by phone at 831-385-3521 or message the Salinas Valley Fair on their Facebook page.

July 9, 2024- Out of abundance of caution for public health, County of Monterey Parks is closing the Lake San Antonio facility due to a large-scale fish die off from an unknown cause. On July 5, 2024, Parks staff noticed that dead baitfish, mostly shad, began washing up on the shore around Lake San Antonio and immediately contacted California Department of Fish and Wildlife (CDFW) to report the situation. At that time, the CDFW fisheries biologist stated the fish die off was most likely due to the high temperatures and low dissolved oxygen level in the water and that the situation most likely did not present a risk to the public. Parks staff also contacted the Water Resources Agency (WRA), State Water Resources Control Board and Environmental Health Bureau.   Unfortunately, the fish die off has continued with larger species such as bass, catfish, crappie, carp, and trout being impacted. Attached photos include a 3–4-pound bass.   CDFW, WRA and EHB are working together to try to determi
