The City of King received notification on Wednesday, March 6 that it's grant application for over $1.5 million for pre-construction activities related to a King City passenger rail platform has been approved. The platform is proposed to allow service by the existing Coast Starlight to King City and access to Fort Hunter Liggett, U.S. Army Garrison and Pinnacles National Park. According to King City Mayor Mike LeBarre, the City has been working for several years on plans for a multimodal transportation center and this funding will be a tremendous step in making that goal a reality. The grant will fund design of the platform services needed to pursue approval from Union Pacific on a needed right-of-way, permits, a new crossing at Broadway Street and other related pre-construction activities. The announcement was part of $13.1 million from Senate Bill 1 State Rail Assistance (SRA) funding approved by the California State Transportation Agency (CalSTA) to advance 9 projects throughout the state. The goal of improving passenger rail service is to help alleviate traffic congestion on Highway 101 and make the Central Coast more accessible for commuters, tourists and residents.
