On Saturday night, December 29, the California Highway Patrol (CHP) Monterey Area will conduct a sobriety checkpoint somewhere within the unincorporated area of Monterey County.
All too often members of our community are senselessly injured or killed on local roadways by intoxicated drivers. The goal of the CHP is to ensure the safe passage of each and every motorist by targeting roads where there is a high frequency of intoxicated drivers. A sobriety checkpoint is a proven effective tool for achieving this goal and is designed to augment existing patrol operations. By publicizing our efforts we believe we can deter motorists from drinking and/or driving. Traffic volume permitting, all vehicles will be checked for drivers who are under the influence of alcohol/drugs. Our objective is to send a clear message to those individuals that consider mixing alcohol and/or drugs.
Historically, DUI related collisions have accounted for nearly one third of all fatal collisions in the nation. Drugs, other than alcohol, are involved in nearly 15% of all collisions. Prevention of driving under the influence is everyone's responsibility. Before drinking, designate a non-drinking driver when with a group; don't let your friends drive impaired; if you have been drinking or using drugs, get a ride home or call a taxi or rideshare; and finally, if you're hosting an event where alcohol will be served, remind your guests to plan ahead and designate their sober driver; offer alcohol-free beverages, and make sure all guests leave with a sober driver.
The sobriety checkpoint will begin at 8:00 PM and conclude at 4:00 AM. They will indicate the exact location on Saturday night, December 29 at 6:00 PM.
Funding for this checkpoint was provided by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety, through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
