A South Monterey County man will be behind bars for more than 6 years for being involved in the brutal death of a family pet. 22-year-old Devonte Sirwet-Perea pleaded "no contest" to residential burglary, animal abuse and arson on Thursday morning, August 30. According to law enforcement, on March 27, 2018, Sirwet-Perea was able to get his mother's pit bull named Kato, out of the family home then sprayed the dog in lighter fluid and set him on fire. The animal was later found off of Metz Road in Soledad with burns to 90% of his body and later had to be humanely euthanized. Law enforcement states that Sirwet-Perea seriously harmed the animal to get revenge on his mother, who had thrown him out of the house because of his temper and a drug problem. Sirwet-Perea is going to be formally sentenced on October 18.
