Phone Scam Alert

Image result for generic phone scam

The Monterey County Sheriff’s Office reminds people to beware of a caller reported to be “Lt. Charles Whitman.” He’ll tell you that you have misdemeanor warrants for your arrest based on your non-response to a Grand Jury summons and that you call him at 831-920-0562 to take care of the warrants. He’ll also tell you to ask for him or a “Sgt Stephanie Love.”
This is a scam! Do not call the phone number. The Monterey County Sheriff’s Office does not have anyone employed by either name.
The Sheriff’s Office does not contact people over the phone for outstanding warrants and would never ask anyone for money over the phone.
A Monterey County resident who received a call, did the right thing by calling the Sheriff’s Office first to see if they had anyone by that name. When she was told that they did not, she did not call the number.
County employees are not immune to these scam calls either.
A County employee received a call on her department office phone. She promptly called and reported it to law enforcement.
The Monterey County Sheriff’s Office thanks the public for informing them when they receive these types of scam phone calls.
If you have been scammed by a call of this nature and paid out funds, please report it to local law enforcement.
