Greenfield CSW receives acclaim

Assemblywoman Anna Caballero on Wednesday, June 6 recognized  the  Greenfield Community Science Workshop (Greenfield CSW) as her District's Non-Profit of the Year. The Greenfield CSW is a community-based organization committed to enriching the educational experience of historically underserved youth by providing them with a safe, fun, and stimulating environment where they can explore their world through science.
The Greenfield CSW first began facilitating hands-on science activities in local public spaces in 2011.  From the beginning, the goal of the program has been that of instilling in their youth an academic appreciation for science.  The Greenfield CSW has established a robust and growing partnership with the Greenfield Union School District and with a number of organizations in the region. The Greenfield CSW currently runs five major programs across South Monterey County through which it serves 15,000 total youth.
The core program of the Greenfield CSW, this is also what sets the Greenfield CSW apart from other science centers, it’s drop-in program, a making/learning space that is open-structured, open door, and free to families:

Open-structure: Students are in charge, they get to decide what to do and how to do it
Open door: Students and families can participate at any time and level during the year
Free to families: Everybody can participate, regardless of income

All other Greenfield CSW Programs follow a similar approach to science learning, one that gives youth  the  opportunity  to  explore,  discover,  and  learn,  using  all  senses,  from  our  physical  and natural world.
The Greenfield CSW is part of a state-wide network of science workshops that have been serving youth in California’s most underserved areas for more than 25 years. These organizations include
the Mission and Excelsior Science Workshops in San Francisco, the Watsonville Environmental
Science  Workshop,  the  Fresno  Community  Science  Workshop,  and  the  Salinas  Community
Science Workshop.
The  Greenfield  CSW  is  a  program  of  the  City  of  Greenfield  (the  City),  the  City  provides
essential  support  and  services  that  make  the  existence  and  operation  of  the  Greenfield  CSW
possible.

Caballero will present a plaque to the Greenfield Community Science Workshop during the grand  opening  of  her  new  office  in  Soledad sometime in late June.  Caballero  is  a  strong advocate  of  agricultural  communities  and  families  and  has  vowed  to  work  with  organizations like  the  Greenfield  CSW  to  engage  kids  of  rural  communities  with  science,  with  the  hope  to
inspire  them  to  pursue  an  education  and  career  in  science,  engineering,  and  technology, particularly those having to do with agriculture.

Lake San Antonio Closed Due to Large Scale Fish Die Off; Number of Fish Impacted is Increasing and Reason for Die Off Remains Unknown

July 9, 2024- Out of abundance of caution for public health, County of Monterey Parks is closing the Lake San Antonio facility due to a large-scale fish die off from an unknown cause. On July 5, 2024, Parks staff noticed that dead baitfish, mostly shad, began washing up on the shore around Lake San Antonio and immediately contacted California Department of Fish and Wildlife (CDFW) to report the situation. At that time, the CDFW fisheries biologist stated the fish die off was most likely due to the high temperatures and low dissolved oxygen level in the water and that the situation most likely did not present a risk to the public. Parks staff also contacted the Water Resources Agency (WRA), State Water Resources Control Board and Environmental Health Bureau.   Unfortunately, the fish die off has continued with larger species such as bass, catfish, crappie, carp, and trout being impacted. Attached photos include a 3–4-pound bass.   CDFW, WRA and EHB are working together to try to determi
