Unlicensed Greenfield contractor faces prison sentence

Image result for court

Monterey County District Attorney Dean D. Flippo announced on Tuesday, April 10 that 54-year-old Salomon Calderon Medina of Greenfield entered a guilty plea on March 13, 2018 to residential burglary along with 2 misdemeanor counts of unlicensed contracting and not having workers’ compensation insurance.
The Monterey County District Attorney’s Consumer Protection Unit began investigating Medina in response to a complaint from an elderly King City couple. The couple alleged that Medina approached them in a supermarket parking lot where he offered his services as a contractor. However, Medina never disclosed that he was not a licensed contractor. Believing Medina to be lawfully licensed to perform such services, the couple invited Medina into their home. Once inside the couple’s residence, Medina again represented that he could remodel their bathroom and asked for $3,600 in professional fees. The couple paid Medina for the remodeling work. Although, he returned several days later with 2 workers and did general yard work, Medina never started the bathroom remodel and eventually abandoned the job. When the couple tried to contact him to get a refund, Medina ceased communicating with them. During the investigation, it was determined that Medina had prior felony convictions for elder abuse, diversion of contractor funds and fraud. In light of his criminal record and the predatory nature of his interactions with the King City couple, the District Attorney charged Medina with residential burglary, a serious felony. The case was investigated by District Attorney Investigators Steve Guidi, George Costa and Martin Sanchez as well as CSLB Enforcement Representative Georgia Solorzano. Medina will be sentenced on April 24, 2018 by Judge Carrie Panetta and faces up to 4 years in state prison.

On July 5, 2024, Parks staff noticed that dead baitfish, mostly shad, began washing up on the shore around Lake San Antonio and immediately contacted California Department of Fish and Wildlife (CDFW) to report the situation. At that time, the CDFW fisheries biologist stated the fish die off was most likely due to the high temperatures and low dissolved oxygen level in the water and that the situation most likely did not present a risk to the public. Parks staff also contacted the Water Resources Agency (WRA), State Water Resources Control Board and Environmental Health Bureau.   Unfortunately, the fish die off has continued with larger species such as bass, catfish, crappie, carp, and trout being impacted. Attached photos include a 3–4-pound bass.   CDFW, WRA and EHB are working together to try to determi
