Panetta took part
in a bipartisan House Agriculture Committee hearing with USDA Secretary Sonny
Perdue to discuss the state of the country’s rural economy on Tuesday, February
6 in Washington D.C. Congressman Panetta spoke
with Secretary Perdue about agriculture’s labor shortage, calling it probably the most
important issue faced by producers on the central coast of California and
indicated that he appreciates the actions that have been taken by Secretary
Perdue to help tackle these concerns. Congressman Panetta
also asked about interagency efforts to improve the current H2-A visa process. Secretary Perdue said that they are trying to work more carefully with DHS
on this issue.
Lake San Antonio Closed Due to Large Scale Fish Die Off; Number of Fish Impacted is Increasing and Reason for Die Off Remains Unknown
July 9, 2024- Out of abundance of caution for public health, County of Monterey Parks is closing the Lake San Antonio facility due to a large-scale fish die off from an unknown cause. On July 5, 2024, Parks staff noticed that dead baitfish, mostly shad, began washing up on the shore around Lake San Antonio and immediately contacted California Department of Fish and Wildlife (CDFW) to report the situation. At that time, the CDFW fisheries biologist stated the fish die off was most likely due to the high temperatures and low dissolved oxygen level in the water and that the situation most likely did not present a risk to the public. Parks staff also contacted the Water Resources Agency (WRA), State Water Resources Control Board and Environmental Health Bureau.
