Washington State Man Sentenced to Prison for Vehicular Manslaughter and Felony Driving Under the Influence Causing Injury Incident that Happened in King City in 2025

  SALINAS, California - Monterey County District Attorney Jeannine M. Pacioni announced on January 30 that on January 28, 2026, Judge Pamela Butler sentenced 39-year-old Anthony Harvey of Washington State to 6 years in the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation, after pleading to one count of Vehicular Manslaughter While Intoxicated and one count of Felony Driving Under the Influence Causing Injury, with a Great Bodily Injury Enhancement. These charges constitute one “Strike” under California’s Three Strikes Law. On February 4, 2025, shortly before midnight, CHP officers were dispatched on report of a solo vehicle collision on US-101 near Jolon Road in King City. Officers arrived to find a Ford U-Haul Transit Van with significant damage to the front end, roof, and rear axle, indicating that the vehicle had rolled off the road. Vegetation Fire Knocked Down on Highway 101 Outside of King City on January 29

  A brush fire broke out on Highway 101 southbound north of the Wild Horse Road exit outside of King City sometime after 11:30 am on Thursday morning, January 29. Fire crews dowsed the blaze in over 10 minutes. No one was injured.  

2 Vehicle Wreck on Highway 101 in San Ardo Area on January 29

  A 2 vehicle accident occurred on Highway 101 Southbound near the San Ardo off-ramp in the San Ardo area at 11:29 am on Thursday morning, January 29. Minor injuries were reported from the crash.

Granite Construction Secures U.S. 101 Rehabilitation Project Near King City

  WATSONVILLE, Calif.--Granite Construction announced on January 29 that it has been selected for a significant infrastructure project to rehabilitate an 8 mile stretch of U.S. Highway 101 near King City in Monterey County, California. This project, with an estimated cost of approximately $20 million, will receive federal funding and be included in Granite’s first quarter CAP. Faith & Family Farms to Pay $120,000 in Civil Penalties for Cannabis Licensing Violations

  SALINAS, California - Monterey County District Attorney Jeannine M. Pacioni announced on January 28 that her Cannabis Enforcement Unit has resolved a case against Faith & Family Farms, LLC, a licensed cannabis cultivator located at 22730 Fuji Lane, in unincorporated Monterey County. This case resolves allegations that the company used unlicensed transporters to distribute their cannabis products, and that they failed to include all of their product in the state’s cannabis track-and-trace system. Under the terms of the stipulated judgment, Faith & Family was ordered to pay $120,000 in civil penalties and is subject to injunctive relief prohibiting future violations of state and local cannabis laws. The SPCA Monterey County is Caring for a Gray Fox who is Recovering After Having Pipe Stuck on Neck for Weeks

  On Monday, January 26 the SPCA Monterey County Wildlife Rescue and Rehabilitation Center took in an injured gray fox with a corrugated pipe stuck around his neck. The fox is currently recovering.  The fox was first seen in the Corral de Tierra area on January 11. Concerned neighbors set traps and posted alerts about the fox on social media to try to help him. Thankfully, early in the morning hours of January 26, the fox walked into a trap baited with syrup-soaked bread on Mesa del Toro.  “Thank you for taking care of the little fox,” says Claire Pendleton, who trapped the young fox and brought him to the SPCA Wildlife Center. “I have been working with neighbors daily to catch him and have lost a lot of sleep worrying about him.” Skilled SPCA wildlife rescuers sedated the young male fox and carefully cut the corrugated pipe off his neck. Bright Futures Educational Partnership and CalKIDS Highlight Monterey County Partnership and Community-Powered Impact Through MCGives Campaign

Fatal 1 Vehicle Rollover Outside of Soledad on January 24; Driver is Arrested for Felony DUI

 The Monterey California Highway Patrol reports that a Gonzales man is dead and another man is facing felony DUI charges as a result of a fatal 1 vehicle collision that occurred outside of Soledad late Saturday night, January 24. The fatal wreck took place as the driver and passenger were heading at an unknown speed off of Metz Road and Highway 146 south of Stonewall Canyon Road when their vehicle went off the road and overturned. The passenger, identified as 22-year-old Nathan Ruiz, was ejected from the vehicle and died at the scene, while the driver identified as 24-year-old Octavio Hernandez of Gonzales received minor injuries and was transported to Natividad Medical Center in Salinas to be treated. Hernandez is facing felony DUI charges.

1 Vehicle Rollover on Highway 101 Outside of Soledad on January 23

  1 vehicle overturned on Highway 101 Northbound near the CTF exit outside of Soledad at 1:08 pm on Friday afternoon, January 23. Minor injuries were reported from the accident. 

Structure Fire that Broke Out in Greenfield on January 23 Knocked Down

  At about 12 am on Friday, January 23 the Greenfield Police and Fire Departments responded to a structure fire on the 200 block of San Antonio Drive in Greenfield. Thanks to the quick response of the Greenfield Fire Department, with assistance from Cal Fire–Soledad, CTF, South Monterey County, Gonzales, and the King City Fire Departments, the fire was contained to the garage. No injuries were reported. The affected family was connected with resources through the American Red Cross. Preliminary evidence indicates the fire may have originated near a clothes dryer, but the cause remains under investigation. The Greenfield PD states that this incident is a reminder of the importance of regularly cleaning dryer vents and lint traps. Lint buildup is a common fire hazard and can quickly lead to a structure fire. Gonzales Man Sentenced to 34 Years in Prison for Child Molestation

SALINAS, California- Monterey County District Attorney Jeannine M. Pacioni announced on January 22 that on January 20, 2026, Judge Carrie Panetta sentenced 30-year-old Jose Christian Montenegro of Gonzales, to 34 years in prison for committing 4 counts of forcible lewd acts upon a child under 14 and one lewd act on a child under the age of 14. These offenses are serious and violent felonies and considered strikes under California’s Three Strikes law. Montenegro will also be required to register as a sex offender for the rest of his life. Jane Doe 1 reported that Montenegro, a family member, had been sexually assaulting her for many years. Jane Doe 1 reported that Montenegro began touching her intimate areas when she was 6 or 7 years old. Montenegro would touch her both over and under her clothing numerous times a week. Male Juvenile Shot in Soledad on January 21

  The Soledad Police Department reports that on Wednesday night, January 21, at approximately 6:42 p.m officers responded to reports of shots heard in the area of 1300 block of Palm Avenue. Upon arrival, officers located a male juvenile with a gunshot wound to the head. Officers immediately rendered aid, secured the scene, and the juvenile was transported to Natividad Medical Center in Salinas by AMR for medical treatment. A thorough search of the surrounding area was conducted, and surveillance footage is currently being collected and reviewed as part of the investigation.  At this time, no suspects have been arrested. This incident remains an active and ongoing investigation. The Soledad Police Department is asking anyone with information related to this incident to come forward. Soledad Youth Council Lead Citywide Street Safety Initiative

  Soledad, CA – The Soledad Youth Council (SYC) has been leading a comprehensive Street Safety Initiative, launched in October 2025 as their main initiative for the 25/26 year. The initiative is focused on identifying and addressing pedestrian and traffic safety concerns throughout the City of Soledad. Since launching the initiative in the fall of 2025, the Soledad Youth Council members have spent the past several months conducting field observations and analyzing streets and intersections they believe present safety challenges for youth, families, and the broader community. This work has included documenting visibility issues, traffic patterns, cross walk conditions, and factors that impact pedestrian safety. Fatal Solo Vehicle Crash off of River Road North of Gonzales River Road on January 19

  MONTEREY COUNTY, Calif. – On Monday night, January 19, 2026, at approximately 5:32 p.m., California Highway Patrol (CHP) officers responded to a solo vehicle traffic crash on northbound River Road north of Gonzales River Road.  Preliminary investigation indicates that a white Nissan SUV, driven by 23-year-old female, Aja Hill of Seaside, was traveling northbound on River Road. The Nissan was occupied by a 23-year-old female resident of Seaside, and a 2-year-old male resident of Seaside. Due to Hill’s level of intoxication, the Nissan SUV went off the roadway, crashed into a power pole, and overturned.  Hill sustained suspected serious injuries and was transported to a local hospital, while the 23-year-old female passenger who was not wearing their seatbelt, was ejected from the vehicle, was also transported to a local hospital and provided medical aid; however, she was pronounced dead at the hospital. Time to Apply for a California Rodeo Salinas Scholarship; Students May Apply Through the Community Foundation for Monterey County

  SALINAS, CA, January 13, 2026 – The California Rodeo Salinas awarded $30,000 in educational scholarships in 2025, and the application period for 2026 funds is currently open. SPCA Monterey County Will Have Low-Cost Mobile Spay & Neuter Clinics in King City on January 15 & 22

County of Monterey to Begin Interim Security Screening at the Government Center in Salinas on January 13

  Monterey County, CA — Beginning Tuesday, January 13, 2026, the County of Monterey will implement interim security screening for members of the public attending Monterey County Board of Supervisors meetings in the Government Center located at 168 W. Alisal Street in Salinas. Screenings will take place at the entrance to the Board Chambers and will include handheld metal detection wands and bag checks. Signage will be posted at the entrance to guide visitors through the screening process, and security staff will be available to assist. The screenings are being implemented to enhance safety for visitors, employees, and County operations. Members of the public planning to attend Tuesday Board meetings are encouraged to allow extra time for entry into the Board Chambers. Wreaths Across America Recycling Event at the King City Cemetery on January 17

  There will be a recycling event for wreaths that were placed on veterans graves on December 13. Volunteers can bring hand clippers and meet at the King City Cemetery located at 1010 Broadway in King City at 10am on Saturday, January 17.  Volunteers are asked to please enter the cemetery at the back gate. Fatal 3 Vehicle Accident Involving Wrong Way Driver on Highway 101 Outside of King City on January 10

  A fatal multi-vehicle collision happened on Saturday night, January 10 at 9:51 p.m. on northbound Highway 101 outside of King City. According to the King City CHP a 2016 Toyota Tacoma driven by 65-year-old Paul Lee Cooper of Otis, Oregon was heading the wrong way going southbound in the northbound lanes south of Jolon Road, while a 2006 Toyota Corolla driven by 33-year-old Dinora Maribel Gomez of Salinas was heading northbound on Highway 101 south of Jolon Road in the #1 lane and a Honda Accord driven by 36-year-old Ignacio Sangerman of King City was also traveling northbound on Highway 101 south of Jolon Road but was in the #2 lane. Due to Cooper's level of impairment his vehicle went the wrong way on Highway 101 going directly into the path of Gomez' vehicle causing the rear of her car to crash with the front of the vehicle driven by Sangerman. E Hood sentenced 42-year-old Miguel Rubio of Greenfield, to 25 years in prison for committing 3 counts of forcible lewd acts upon a child under 14. City of Soledad Landlord Pays $30,000 for Violating California's Tenant Protection Act and Other Consumer Protection Laws

  SALINAS, California - Monterey County District Attorney Jeannine M. Pacioni announced on January 9 that her Consumer Protection Unit has resolved a case against Mi Tierra Linda LLC, the owner of an apartment building located at 150 Encinal Road in Soledad. This settlement resolves multiple violations of law, including violations of California’s Tenant Protection Act, failure to maintain workers compensation insurance, failure to test for asbestos prior to disturbing potentially asbestos-containing materials, and hiring unlicensed contractors to perform renovation work. As part of the settlement, the landlord will pay $30,000 in civil penalties and is subject to an injunction prohibiting further violations. California’s Tenant Protection Act creates statewide protections against excessive rent increases and safeguards tenants who have lived in their homes for more than 12 months by requiring landlords to have “just cause” before terminating a lease. King City City Council Announces Selection of José Arreola as New City Manager

  January 7, 2025-Following an extensive recruitment process, José Arreola has been selected by the King City City Council to be its next City Manager. Arreola will replace Steve Adams, who is retiring after serving in the position for the past 10 years. Arreola was selected from 31 applicants and 8 finalists for the position. The King City City Council will formally consider the proposed city manager contract at its meeting on Tuesday night, January 13.
