If you are visiting the County of Monterey Government Center on Alisal in Salinas in July, you’ll see construction
activity around the government and court buildings as the County’s COVID-19 Memorial is being installed.
The beautiful new installation made of colored glass panels will be placed along the pedestrian plaza across
from the Crime Victims Memorial, serving both as a reminder of lives lost and a way to honor all those that
helped our county through the pandemic – our local healthcare workers, public servants and the community.
The County of Monterey lost 940 residents to COVID-19 during the pandemic. This tribute was funded by
donations made over the last three years and managed by the Community Foundation for Monterey County.
Contributions are still being accepted. Major donors to the project include:
Supervisor Luis Alejo
Taylor Fresh Foods, Inc.
Monterey County Office of Education
Grower Shipper Association of Central
California
Salinas Valley Health Foundation
Salinas Valley Health, Medical Staff
Santa Lucia Rotary Foundation
Salinas Rotary Club
Natividad Medical Foundation Inc.
Nicholas M. Pasculli
“Each life lost to Covid-19 mattered and leaves a hole in
the hearts of loved ones, family members, friends and
surrounding community,” said Supervisor Luis Alejo,
who was a driving force behind the memorial project.
The memorial will have five transparent colored panels
representing the five Districts in Monterey County,
composed of multiple pieces of colored glass in varying
tones of the same color, signifying our county’s diversity.
There will be solar lighting, landscaping and a seating
bench. The project budget is $340,000. Work should be
completed in early August.
Project collaborators include:
• Shelby Hawthorne Glass, Sand City (she is a Big Sur native)
• Paul David Partnership
• BFS Landscape Architects
• R.F. Koeber Inc, Contractor
