The 2022 California Rodeo’s Carnival Returns July 15-24

  SALINAS, CA, June 30, 2022 – The California Rodeo Salinas Carnival kicks off on Friday, July 15 and is open daily from 3pm to 11pm until Sunday, July 24 at 295 Sun Way in Salinas. 2021-22 King City Area Rainfall Numbers

  The National Weather Service reports that as of 4 pm on Thursday, June 30, 6.98 inches of precipitation was accumulated in the King City area for the 2021-22 rain season which goes from July 1 to June 30. This season's rain numbers are a drop from 2020-21 where 7.36 inches of rain fell. 

Man in Greenfield Arrested for Criminal Threats, Battery and Other Charges on June 29

  23-year-old Bernardino Velasco was arrested off of Chalone Drive in Greenfield for violating his probation, criminal threats, battery and possession of drug paraphernalia at 9:52 pm on Wednesday night, June 29. 

Man in Soledad Busted for Weapons and Narcotics Charges

  According to the Soledad Police Department at midnight on Wednesday, June 29 South Monterey County Task Force Officers were conducting highway interdiction operations on U.S. 101 when they observed a suspicious vehicle with several vehicle code violations. Christopher Valencia from San Bernardino was contacted by officers. While he was being contacted, K-9 Koda took a stroll around the vehicle and had a positive alert on several areas. Officers then located a loaded, unregistered "Ghost Gun" in the vehicle, along with narcotics.   Valencia was arrested for firearms and narcotics violations, and the vehicle was impounded for a later search after the issuance of a search warrant. Valencia was transported to the Monterey County Jail where he was charged with weapons and narcotics violations.

Attempted Homicide Investigation in Soledad

  More details have been released about a shooting that injured an off-duty security guard that occurred on Wednesday morning, June 29, 2022 in Soledad. The incident happened at 11:00 am as Soledad Police Officers were dispatched to a reported victim of a shooting on the 900 block of Alhambra Street. As officers arrived, they located a male in his 20s, suffering from a single gunshot wound. The victim was conscious and was able to tell officers he was the victim of a robbery. The victim said he attempted to resist the robbery and was then shot. He was transported to the Natividad Medical Center, where he underwent surgery and is in stable condition. During the initial call, officers from the Greenfield Police Department, King City Police Department, Monterey County Sheriff’s Office, and Monterey County Probation Department responded to assist.  Soledad Detectives, Greenfield Detectives, and members of the South Monterey County Task Force arrived to take over the investigation. Off-Duty Security Guard Shot and Robbed in Soledad

  The Soledad Police Department is looking into a shooting that occurred involving an off-duty security guard off of Alhambra Street and Las Flores Street on Wednesday morning, June 29. Police Chief Damon Wasson states that when the guard arrived in the area, police say he was held up at gunpoint. When he tried to drive away he was shot and after being shot he was robbed and his gun was taken. The victim was transported to Natividad Medical Center in Salinas to be treated.

Dumpster Fire in Greenfield Knocked Down on June 28

  Firefighters in Greenfield were able to extinguish a dumpster on the 200 block of Apple Street that broke out at 6:26 pm on Tuesday night, June 28. No injuries were reported.

  18-year-old Fabian Reyes was arrested off of 10th Street in Greenfield for a hit and run traffic collision and a DUI at 3:30 pm on Tuesday, June 28. 

Vegetation Fire Near Derby Lane in Paso Robles Contained on June 28

  PASO ROBLES, CA – At approximately 11:21a.m. on Tuesday June 28, Paso Robles Fire and Emergency Services was dispatched to the area south of Derby Lane for a reported vegetation fire. The first arriving unit reported approximately ¼ acre fire immediately threatening 3 structures. While crews were attacking the fire surrounding the structures, the fire spotted across Fourth Street to the south igniting the hillside. Crews were able to hold the original fire at one-third of an acre without any structure damage. The spot fire was held in check by Cal Fire aircraft and forward progress was stopped at 8 acres. Three fire engines and two Chief Officers from Paso Robles responded. Under the cities Automatic Aid Agreement four fire engines, one bulldozer, two hand crews, one Battalion Chief, one air-attack plane, and two tankers from Cal Fire/SLO County Fire, and one fire engine from Atascadero Fire responded. 39-year-old Hediberto Frias was taken into custody off of the 1000 block of Oak Avenue in Greenfield for Possession of a Controlled Substance at 8:35 pm on Monday night, June 27. 

Man in Gonzales Detained for Possession of Drug Paraphernalia and Possession of a Controlled Substance on June 27

  Gonzales Police Officers at 12:09 pm on Monday, June 27 while conducting routine patrol on the 800 block of Fifth Street and contacted a male who was on probation and search terms. Officers discovered that Miguel Alvarez was in Possession of Drug Paraphernalia and Possession of a Controlled Substance. Alvarez was arrested and booked into the Monterey County Jail.

2 Correctional Officers Stabbed by Inmate at Salinas Valley State Prison in Soledad on June 25

  According to Salinas Valley State Prison Officials on Monday, June 27 an inmate stabbed two correctional officers with a "manufactured weapon" during a cell search at the prison at 9:55 am on Saturday, June 25. Both officers were transported to a hospital and treated for lacerations and stab wounds. The suspect was identified as 26-Carlos Perdomo of Los Angeles County, who is serving a life sentence without the possibility of parole for two counts of first-degree murder with the intentional discharge of a firearm causing great bodily injury/death. Perdomo was put into segregated housing at Pleasant Valley State Prison while this incident is being investigated.

Greenfield Man Caught and Arrested for Suspected DUI Fatal Hit and Run 2 Vehicle Crash that Killed Salinas Man on June 25

  The Monterey-CHP reports that on Saturday morning, June 25 at 3:17 am a 41 year old Salinas man was driving his 2006 Dodge Ram 2500 on northbound Highway 101 north of Main Street in Salinas, while 20 year old Andres Roque Espinoza of Greenfield was driving a 2020 Subaru WRX northbound on Highway 101 north of Main Street behind the Dodge Ram.  A preliminary investigation determined that the front of the Subaru hit the rear of the Dodge causing the Dodge to overturn and rotate toward the right shoulder.  Emergency personnel responded to the scene, but the driver of the Dodge eventually succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver of the Subaru Espinoza fled the scene and was later arrested by the CHP. Drugs and/or alcohol are believed to be a factor at this time. Hartnell Road Bridge Replacement Project South of Salinas Begins July 5, 2022

Construction work on the Hartnell Road Bridge Replacement Project will begin on July 5, 2022. The bridge replacement will require the closure of Hartnell Road approximately 400 feet west of Alisal Road, just south of the City of Salinas, for the duration of the work. The project is expected to take eight months and be completed in February 2023. A new bridge will be built, and the existing bridge will be removed. The new bridge and roadway approaches will provide two 12-foot lanes and 8-foot shoulders. Most of the road work is expected to be done during the day between the hours of 7:00 AM and 5:00 PM. A detour plan (see next page) will be in place to advise motorist of road closure and suggest alternate routes. Greenfield Man Sentenced to 8 Years in State Prison for DUI

  SALINAS, California—Monterey County District Attorney Jeannine M. Pacioni announced on June 27 that on June 24, 2022, 25-year-old Gerardo Bautista Hernandez of Greenfield, was sentenced to 8 years in state prison after pleading no contest to felony driving under the influence and causing injury. Hernandez also admitted that he caused great bodily injury to four victims, that he has a prior DUI conviction, and his blood alcohol content (BAC) was 0.15% or higher. On January 23, 2022, at approximately 6:14 p.m., CHP officers responded to a head-on collision between a Toyota and a Saturn on northbound US 101 near Walnut Avenue. Upon arrival, officers contacted a mother and her three juvenile children in the Toyota—all victims were injured. The mother had several displaced rib fractures, a sternal fracture, and an ankle fracture. The 15-year-old victim had significant internal injuries.   The Greenfield Police Department reports that a catalytic converter was stolen from a vehicle on the 100 block of Maple Avenue at 12:29 pm on Sunday, June 26. If anyone has any information about this theft they're asked to called the Greenfield PD at (831) 674-5111.

  44-year-old Oscar Villagomez was detained on the 400 block on Clifton Court in Greenfield at 10:15 am on Sunday, June 26 for making criminal threats. 

Man in Greenfield Taken into Custody for Battery on a Peace Officer and Other Charges on June 24

  36-year-old Edgardo Iraheta was taken into custody on Friday, June 24 off of Walnut Avenue in Greenfield for battery on a peace officer, resisting arrest and a probation violation. 

Man in Soledad Arrested for Weapons Violations and Parole Violation on June 24

  On Friday, June 24 Soledad Police Officers contacted known parolee Armando Aleman in a vehicle. Aleman was removed from the vehicle for a parole compliance check and was found to have a loaded "Ghost Gun" where he was sitting. Aleman was later transported and booked into the Monterey County Jail on weapons violations and a parole violation.

2 People Taken Into Custody Involving Sideshow that led to Battery and Vehicle Chase in Monterey County on June 24

  The Monterey County Sheriff's Office reports that at 10 pm on Friday night, June 24 over 75 community members in the Las Palmas area said that 40 to 50 vehicles were racing, doing donuts in the roadway, blocking exits and setting off fireworks. Community members began to confront the reckless drivers and 2 residents were battered. One of the victims was able to get the plate number of the car the suspect was in as 8 deputies arrived in the area and the group began to disperse. The suspected vehicle information was given to the Salinas Police Department as the Sheriff’s Office began to coordinate with them since the group went into the city. The car was located and the battery suspect was arrested.  The group again blocked roadways and recklessly drove at two different locations over the next hour. This led to the Sheriff’s Office being involved in a pursuit of one of the vehicles on North Main at Russell Road. The pursuit went down North Main at speeds of 95 MPH and the vehicle w

Results Certified from June 7, 2022 Midterm State Primary Election in Monterey County

  Results from the 2022 Midterm State Primary election on June 7 in Monterey County were certified on Friday, June 24.  Over 64,700 votes were cast with a turnout of 31.08%. In the 4 person contested race for Monterey County Sheriff Tina Nieto received 48.9% of the vote, Joe Moses accumulated over 25%, Justin Patterson over 17.9% and Jeff Hoyne over 7%. In the race for a District 18 Congressional seat in the US House of Representatives Congresswoman Zoe Lofgren received over 46.5%, Peter Hernandez over 35% and Luis Acevedo-Arreguin picked over 18%, while in the District 29 State Assembly race Assemblyman Robert Rivas earned over 63.8% and Stephanie Castro over 36%. In the race for a Chualar Union School District Governing Board Member Trustee Area 3 seat Rebecca Trujillo took home over 56% of the vote Ofelia Flores grabbed over 43% of the vote and. Greenfield Police Officers Confiscate Over 100 Pounds of Illegal Fireworks at 2 Residences on June 23

  According to the Greenfield Police Department, Officers visited 2 homes on Thursday, June 23 with search warrants as they located and confiscated over 100 pounds of illegal fireworks. The location of both residences was not disclosed. The Greenfield PD reminds residents that it's a misdemeanor in the State of California to unlawfully set off fireworks adding that you will be arrested! The only fireworks permitted are those with a “Safe and Sane” label. These fireworks can be purchased at fireworks booths throughout the City of Greenfield.

3.3 Magnitude Earthquake Hits Outside of Parkfield on June 24

  A 3.3 magnitude earthquake shook things up outside of the Parkfield area at 2:05 am on Friday morning, June 24. The quake was centered 7 miles southeast of Parkfield. Numerous people in Northern SLO County reported feeling the quake. No damages were reported. 

City of King will have a Cooling Center in place in the Orradre Building at the Salinas Valley Fairgrounds from June 24 to June 27

  City of King Officials will be opening a cooling center due to the rising temperatures expected in the region throughout the upcoming weekend. The cooling center will be located at the Salinas Valley Fairgrounds in the Orradre Building from 8:00 am to 5:00 pm daily from June 24 through June 27. The City would like to extend its thanks to the Salinas Valley Fairgrounds for their partnership in opening the cooling center. In addition, the King City Recreation Center pool located at 401 Division Street is open Tuesday through Sunday from 1:00 pm to 4:00 pm. Admission to the pool is $3 for those 8 years old and younger and $4 those 9 years old and up.

Lightning Caused Power Outage in South Monterey County on June 22

  Numerous PG&E customers in South Monterey County were impacted by lightning caused power outages that damaged equipment in the area late Wednesday afternoon and Wednesday evening, June 22. 97 customers in King City were affected, while 168 customers in the Soledad area were without electricity for hours. A total of 1,927 customers were without electricity in Monterey County. All of the power was restored for impacted customers sometime on Thursday morning and Thursday afternoon, June 23.

3 Men Detained at Soledad Cemetery for Weapons Charges on June 22

  Soledad Police Officers were called to the Soledad Cemetery at 12:30 pm on Wednesday, June 22 for a suspicious vehicle parked in the corner of the property. Officers recognized three known gang members identified as Luis Aguayo, Brandon Galvan, and Jose Salazar. K-9 Officer Lozano arrived on the scene with K-9 Bo, who immediately reacted to something in the vehicle. Officers then located a loaded "Ghost Gun" and other weapons in the vehicle. All three men were detained. Soledad and Greenfield Police Detectives, as well as members of the South Monterey County Task Force, were requested to the scene. Based on the suspects actions and the weapons located, Detectives and the Task Force served residential search warrants at Marin Place, Cesar Chavez Street, and Benito Street, collecting further evidence. All three men were later transported and booked into the Monterey County Jail for weapons violations charges.

All Fireworks Prohibited in the City of Paso Robles

  PASO ROBLES, CA – Paso Robles Fire and Emergency Services would like to remind residents that all fireworks including “Safe and Sane” fireworks are prohibited in the City of Paso Robles.    The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) reports that in 2020 about 15,600 people were treated in emergency departments for firework injuries.  Second only to Firecrackers, sparklers accounted for 900 injuries, which were mostly burns to the hands, fingers, and face. Pyrotechnics spark an average of 18,500 fires every year. With the hot and especially dry climate this year,  Paso Robles Fire and Emergency Services are now pleading with the public to refrain from setting off any fireworks.   This year the City of Paso Robles is increasing their enforcement.  Paso Robles Police officers and firefighters will be using aerial device technology with GPS and video capabilities to help them pinpoint the location of where fireworks are being used.  Citations of up to $1000 will be issued to thos

1 Vehicle Collision Outside of King City on Highway 101 on June 21

  A 1 vehicle wreck happened on Highway 101 Southbound north of Teague Avenue between King City and Greenfield at 6:48 pm on Tuesday night, June 21. The CHP reports that the vehicle involved in the crash was a white convertible. The driver received minor injuries. The cause of the accident is unknown.  

Grant Will Help Incarcerated Students Complete a Degree at Hartnell College

  Hartnell College will use a three-year, $480,000 grant from the California Community Colleges (CCC) system to ensure that more incarcerated students not only complete college courses, but also earn a degree and continue their education. The grant, effective July 1, is part of $10 million awarded to 59 awarded to colleges in the CCC’s Rising Scholars Network, funded by Assembly Bill 417. The statewide program serves almost 20,000 justice-involved students both on campus and in prisons, jails and detention centers. Vegetation Fire in Salinas River in Paso Robles Knocked Down

  PASO ROBLES, CA – At approximately 1:40 a.m. on Wednesday June 22, Paso Robles Fire and Emergency Services was dispatched to the area south of Riverbank Lane for a reported vegetation fire. The first arriving unit reported approximately ¼ acre fire burning within the Salinas River, west of the given location, with difficult access. Fortunately, the city’s newly purchased 4x4 Type 3 fire engine was able to drive to the fires edge within minutes. The quick access allowed fire department personnel to keep the fire from growing exponentially, while directing additional resources in for reinforcement. The fire was contained at ½ acre. Three fire engines and one Battalion Chief from Paso Robles responded. Under the cities Automatic Aid Agreements three fire engines, one bulldozer, and Battalion Chief from Cal Fire/SLO County Fire, and one fire engine from Atascadero Fire responded. Paso Robles Man Sentenced in SLO County Superior Court for 1st Degree Premeditated Murder

  25-year-old Nicholas Christopher Ron Jr. of Paso Robles was sentenced to 28 years to life in prison in  SLO County Superior Court on Tuesday, June 21 for first-degree premeditated murder of Trevon Perry on March 15 of 2020. Ron admitted to using a handgun to shoot Perry, who was 27 years old at the time of his death. Perry's family reported him missing on March 16, 2020, but within days of his disappearance, law enforcement began investigating the disappearance as a possible homicide. After a months-long investigation, law enforcement found Perry's remains buried in the backyard of Ron's relatives' house in Riverside. 9 other people – including several of Ron's family members were charged as accessories to the crime.

13-year-old Hospitalized for Public Intoxication in Greenfield

  On Tuesday afternoon, June 21 Greenfield Police Officers received multiple calls from concerned citizens about a group of girls walking on South El Camino Real; callers believed one of the girls was intoxicated.  Officers located the group, and one girl, a 13-year-old was extremely intoxicated. Greenfield Man Arrested for Possession of Fentanyl Pills on June 21

  During the week of June 12, the South Monterey County Taskforce became aware of a Greenfield resident who was using social media to purchase fentanyl M30 pills.  These are the same type of pills that are responsible for many overdoses in South Monterey County.  The Greenfield PD began they investigation, and identified a subject as a 20-year-old from Greenfield. On Tuesday evening, June 21 the Greenfield and Soledad Police Departments served a warrant on the 20-year-old’s house.  Officers located multiple fentanyl pills in the man's bedroom and on his person. He was taken into custody.  During an interview with detectives, the 20-year-old admitted to struggling with addiction, understood the dangers of fentanyl pills, and requested substance abuse intervention; Greenfield Police will be referring the 20-year-old to drug court services as it is their goal to help anyone struggling with this disease, and for that reason, the identity of the 20-year-old is being withheld.  Fentanyl

Greenfield Police Officer Under Investigation by Monterey County DA's Office

  Greenfield Police Officer Christian Tapia, a 4-year veteran of the Greenfield Police Department, was placed on paid administrative leave pending an investigation by the Monterey County District Attorney’s Office. On Friday, June 10 an arrest warrant was issued for charges related to assault. Officer Tapia surrendered himself at the Monterey County Sheriff’s Office to face the charges. Greenfield Acting Police Chief Guillermo Mixer stated that the allegations against Officer Tapia are deeply unsettling. Property Tax Relief Announced for Eligible Monterey County Residents; Critical State Pandemic-Relief Program Announces Eligibility Expansion to Help More Homeowners

  Salinas, CA - The California Mortgage Relief Program has announced it will expand eligibility requirements to give more California homeowners a fresh start in their homes after falling behind on payments due to financial hardships brought on by the COVID-19 pandemic. The program has extended assistance to cover past-due property taxes for homeowners whose mortgage payments are current and homeowners who are mortgage-free. Homeowners who fall in this category could receive up to $20,000 to cover past-due property taxes.   40-year-old Porfirio Gonzalez was arrested off of 7th Street in Greenfield for assault with a deadly weapon and a probation violation at 12:53 am on Monday, June 20. 

Catalytic Converter Theft in Gonzales on June 19

  The Gonzales Police Department reports that a catalytic converter was stolen from a vehicle on the 100 block of Center Street at 5:47 pm on Sunday night, June 19. If anyone has any information about this theft they're asked to called the Gonzales PD at (831) 675-5010. 

National Anthem Singers Wanted for the 2022 California Mid-State Fair!

  (PASO ROBLES, CA) – The California Mid-State Fair is pleased to announce that applications are being accepted for National Anthem singers. Each year the California Mid-State Fair offers local singers the opportunity to sing the National Anthem prior to the start of Chumash Grandstand Arena shows. Interested applicants must completely fill out an online form with contact information, as well as submit a YouTube video/link showing the individual singing the National Anthem A Cappella style. 2022 California Rodeo Awards 7 Educational Scholarhships

  SALINAS, CA, June 17, 2022 – The California Rodeo Salinas has awarded $30,000 in scholarships this year, a record for the Rodeo Association.  The California Rodeo Salinas has proudly offered scholarships for the past 36 years. The program has expanded considerably in the past two years, growing from scholarships being offered only via Hartnell College to an additional program through the Community Foundation for Monterey County (CFMC).  Students who are attending or graduating from Hartnell may apply for the Hartnell College scholarship and the CFMC scholarship allows students who are California Rodeo Salinas Committee Members or related to Committee Members to apply, and funds may be used to attend any college or other post high school education program, including trade school.   As noted by Kelly McCarthy Sutherland, the Chair of the California Rodeo Salinas Scholarship Advisory Committee, “The Rodeo Association’s generosity will impact these students’ lives, and they will in turn
