King City City Council meeting recap

Mayor Mike LaBarre presented a Mayor’s commendation award at the King City City Council meeting on Tuesday night, February 27 to John McElmoyl for the time he put in with the Airport Advisory Committee. Other highlights from the meeting involved a presentation from Monterey Salinas Transit Assistant General Manager of Finance and Administration Hunter Harvath regarding how far MST has come over the years serving King City and other cities in South Monterey County. Harvath said that MST has purchased property on San Antonio Drive in King City to build a new bus garage and facility which will help expand their services in communities all over South Monterey County. Cal Water Local Manager Marc Bloom addressed the Council about a water leak that occurred on a private fire service connection in an industrial area of King City on Friday night, February 23. Volunteers wanted for Amgen Tour of California

The 2018 Amgen Tour of California needs volunteers in King City on May 15. King City Chamber of Commerce Manager Janet Bessemer said that 90 volunteers are needed on May 15 to help out with a number of different duties. Greenfield Parks and Rec talk about Patriot Park

The City of Greenfield Parks and Recreation Committee met on Monday, February 26 to walk through Patriot Park and get an idea regarding what kind of condition that the soccer fields and the park overall is in. Once they were done with their walk through they discussed as a group what they feel needs to be improved at the Park, research everything they talked about before their next meeting in March and send over their ideas to the Greenfield City Council for their consideration. They agreed that the condition of the soccer fields and the park in general needs to be improved, that there should be more safety on the walking and playing fields for games, that the lighting in the parks could be better and that animal and pet issues are resolved.   They also agreed to make a recommendation to the Council that the usage of the soccer fields needs to be reevaluated. The Greenfield Parks and Recreation Committee will be meeting again on Monday night, March 19 at 6pm. 

King City PD is investigating shooting

On Sunday, February 25 at 4:48pm Officers from the King City Police Department responded to the 300 block of South Vanderhurst Street in regards to a call of a man suffering from a gunshot wound. Upon the arrival of the officers, a Hispanic man was found suffering from a gunshot wound and was transported to a local trauma center for treatment of his injuries. Investigators from the Major Crimes Investigations unit were called to investigate the incident. The ensuing investigation determined that the victim was identified as a 19-year-old Hispanic male, who suffered a life threatening gunshot wound to the upper body at a residence on the 300 block of South Vanderhurst. There are no suspects in custody or identified at this time.  No other information is being released, as the investigation is continuing. CPA informs crowd at Chamber luncheon of tax changes in place

Senior Manager and CPA Tyler Willis of Hayashi Wayland out of King City and Paso Robles gave a presentation and answered questions on Thursday, February 22 during a luncheon put on by the King City Chamber of Commerce at Lawrence’s Restaurant about tax cuts and changes that are now in place. Willis feels that one change that’s receiving a lot of attention is the 20% deduction change involving small businesses.

Drive by shooting on Hwy 101 in Greenfield

A portion of Highway 101 in Greenfield was closed for a couple of hours on Friday morning, February 23 as law enforcement officials investigated a drive-by shooting.  A report from the California Highway Patrol and Monterey County Sheriff's Office stated that one man was shot while he was driving on Highway 101 near the Thorne Road exit at around 9:18 am.  A gunman in a dark gray Honda shot several times at an SUV which crashed, flipped and landed on its roof.  The gunman then fled.  The victim in the white SUV suffered 1 gunshot wound and was transported to a hospital for treatment. His condition is unknown.  Investigators are not sure if the highway shooting is connected to 2 recent homicides in south Monterey County.  32-year-old Joseph Suniga of Greenfield was shot to death on Tuesday, February 20 while riding a bicycle on Apple Avenue, and 22-year-old Juan Manuel Ceja of King City, was fatally shot at 450 Jayne Street in King City on February 16.  King City and Greenfield

South County Animal Rescue fundraiser in Soledad this weekend

South County Animal Rescue will be holding a fundraiser this Sunday, February 25 from 12pm to 4pm at Bill Ramos Park in Soledad. Tickets are $10 each. The money raised will support South County Animal Rescue by helping pay off the Vet bills they receive for the animals that they try and rescue. South County Animal Rescue has rescued and put over 250 animals in new homes in over 2 years.  

New businesses are coming to Greenfield

Groundbreaking for ARCO, Carl’s Jr., and Starbucks will be within the next 3 to 5 weeks in Greenfield. City of Greenfield Community Service Director Mic Steinmann said that these are the first new retail projects in the Walnut Avenue Specific Plan area. The entire community is excited to welcome these new businesses to Greenfield. It’s anticipated the businesses will have their grand openings in Summer or Fall of this year. Over the next several months, Steinmann will be making further announcements for the start of the next phase of development that will include a multi-tenant retail building, a new hotel, along with additional retailers and food service establishments. On Tuesday, February at approximately 1:20pm Greenfield Police Officers were dispatched to the 600 block of Apple Street in regards to a shots being fired and a man was down. Upon Officers arrival they located a man down suffering from a gunshot wound. Lifesaving measures were started by first responders however the victim succumbed to his wounds and was pronounced deceased.  Investigators from the Major Crimes Investigations Unit were called to the scene to assume the investigation. The ensuing investigation revealed that the victim was identified as 32-year-old Joseph Suniga of Greenfield, was riding his bicycle east on the 600 block of Apple Street when he was approached by the above listed suspect who produced a firearm and shot the victim. The suspect rode off from the scene. Investigators are reaching out to the public and are asking for their cooperation during this investigation. Girls and Boys High School Basketball CIF Central Coast Section Playoff action will be back in full swing on Thursday night, February 22. In the CCS Division IV Girls Basketball Playoffs King City will be at Terra Nova at 7pm which can be heard on KC102, while in the Girls Division III CCS Playoffs, Soledad will be at Soquel at 5:30pm and in the Boys CCS Division III Playoffs Soledad will be at Aptos at 7pm. King City Police are looking for man wanted in stabbing

On Tuesday night, February 20 at 8:23pm officers responded to the 100 block of Division Street in King City regarding a domestic violence incident, which resulted in a stabbing. A woman sustained multiple stab wounds which were allegedly inflicted by 23-year-old Giovanni Velasquez of King City who is her boyfriend and father of her child. Velasquez fled the area in a grey 2000 Toyota Solara, which was driven by 24-year-old transient Alonzo Marquez. The vehicle was stopped by the California Highway Patrol at the Highway 101 off ramp at Canal Street. Velasquez fled on foot and is at large, while Marquez was taken into custody. Marquez was booked into the Monterey County Jail. Velasquez’ girlfriend was transported to a local trauma center to be treated for non-life threatening injuries.    Velasquez is wanted for Assault with a Deadly Weapon, Domestic Violence, Child Endangerment, Destroying/Concealing Evidence and Delaying/Obstructing an Officer.   If Velasquez is seen, contact

Kids are out and about in the Salinas Valley during FFA Week

This week is FFA week in the Salinas Valley. High School kids are meeting with people in agriculture in their local communities. Mckenzie Hearne from the FFA Chapter in King City feels that FFA week is a good way for kids to receive first hand experience with agriculture in their local business community and it also provides them the opportunity to improve their public speaking skills to let people know what FFA is all about. Hearne shows off swine at Fairs and other events and indicated that she’s looking forward to this year’s Salinas Valley Fair which will be taking place from May 17 to May 20.

Congressman Panetta introduces immigrant witness and protection act

WASHINGTON, DC –  Congressman Jimmy Panetta (CA-20) and Congresswoman Pramila Jayapal (WA-07) announced on Tuesday, February 20 introducing the Immigrant Witness and Victim Protection Act (H.R. 5058). The bill lifts arbitrary caps on the number of “U" visas available for undocumented immigrant witnesses and victims of violent crimes who cooperate with law enforcement. The bill also prevents “U” visa applicants and “T” visa human trafficking victim applicants, from being detained or deported prior to obtaining visas Violence Against Women Act (VAWA) protections. Man shot and killed in Greenfield

On Tuesday, February 20 at approximately 120pm Greenfield Police Officers were dispatched to the 600 block of Apple Street in regards to shots being fired and a man was down. Upon Officers arrival they located a man down suffering from a gunshot wound. Lifesaving measures were started by first responders, however the victim succumbed to his wounds and was pronounced deceased. Investigators from the Major Crimes Investigations Unit were called to the scene to assume the investigation. 2 arrested in King City domestic violence incident

On Saturday, February 17, 2018 at 2:35 p.m., officers from the King City Police Department responded to a report of a domestic violence incident on the 1300 block of Sussex Circle in King City. A minor child in the home called her aunt telling her that her parents were fighting. The relative then called 9-1-1.  Upon arrival, officers located evidence of a possible fight in the driveway and on the sidewalk leading to the house. Numerous attempts were made to contact the parties inside but there was no response for some time. Officers then spoke to a female thru a window who was uncooperative and refused to come outside or provide any information. Due to the fact a child was in the home of domestic violence and evidence of injury to someone, this became an urgent matter to clear the house. Attempted kidnapping in Greenfield

On Thursday, February 15, Greenfield Officers responded to a report of an attempted kidnapping on the 200 block of San Antonio Drive in Greenfield. The victim who is 9 years old  was walking home from school when a lone male driving a blue truck (unknown make and model) pulled up alongside her. The male told the victim to get in the truck, while the victim refused and fled the scene.  The suspect was described as having short cropped gray hair, blue eyes, unshaven with freckles and a light complexion. The case is being investigated by the Greenfield Police Department. Dean Flippo will not run for another term as DA

Monterey County District Attorney Dean D. Flippo announced on Friday, February 16 that he will not seek re- election for an unprecedented 8th term. King City Police are investigating homicide

Officers from the King City Police Department responded to a report of a possible gunshot victim at 450 Jayne Street on Friday morning, February 16 at 6:35 am. Upon arrival, officers located a deceased male in a parked vehicle. The victim died as a result of a gunshot wound and has been identified as 22-year-old Juan Manuel Ceja of King City.  The investigation is being conducted by the Major Crimes Unit, a collaboration between the King City and Greenfield Police Departments. The King City Police Department is encouraging the public to contact them with any information, regarding any suspicious activity observed on the 400 block  of Pearl Street, between the hours of 9:00 pm on Thursday evening, February 15 and 6:30 am on Friday morning, February 16  at (831) 385-4848, or the WeTip line at 1-800-78-CRIME. Salinas PD arrests 4 men for Human Trafficking in Monterey County

A news release put out by the Salinas Police Department reports that on February 4, 2018, Salinas Police patrol officers responded to a disturbance in the 200 block of Kern Street. The officers determined the  disturbance was due to family members of a 14-year-old female runaway attempting to recover her from a vehicle. They successfully recovered the juvenile and discovered the child had been exploited for the purposes of Human Trafficking. Patrol officers positively identified one of the suspects as 19-year-old Daniel Amaro of Soledad who fled the area to an unknown location before he could be contacted. Over the next few days, Detectives from the Salinas Police Department’s Investigations Bureau followed up on information they had received and identified other victims, as well as at least 3 additional suspects. The suspects are 23-year-old Abriam Ibarra of Salinas, 25-year-old Alfredo Hernandez of Gonzales, and 31-year-old Ruben Trujillo of Greenfield. So far, mo

Droves of people were on hand for the 3 rd annual Alliance on Aging South County Trashion Show at the Salinas Valley Fairgrounds on Thursday, February 15. Over 300 people supported this year's fashion show fundraiser and almost 30 models went down a catwalk wearing a variety of different outfits. 

PG&E advises people to secure metallic balloons they may receive on Valentine's Day

Valentine’s Day was on Wednesday, February 14 which means that a lot of metallic balloons were sold. PG&E Spokesperson Mayra Tostado said that metallic balloons can cause power outages if they don’t have a weight attached to them and are let off into the air. Tostado stated that metallic balloons are conductors of electricity that pose a threat to power lines if they're released into the air. Tostado advises people to have a weight attached to their metallic balloon so that the balloon doesn't float away and possibly cause a power outage. In PG&E's service area throughout Northern and Central California, 456 power outages occurred because of metallic balloons in 2017 and many of those outages took place on the Central Coast. Tostado indicated that whoever sells you a balloon by law must have a weight attached to it and added that if you ever come across balloons that are tangled in power lines, don’t touch them. SVSP in Soledad is investigating death of inmate

SOLEDAD – A news release put out by the Salinas Valley State Prison reports (SVSP) that officials are investigating the death of an inmate as a homicide. At around 11:05am on Tuesday, February 13, staff members were performing security checks, and observed 26-year-old inmate George Argueta, lying on the floor in his cell. An alarm was sounded and responding staff immediately removed Argueta from the cell and began administering life-saving measures. 1 suspect was also removed from the cell without incident, and 1 inmate-manufactured weapon was recovered at the scene.  Argueta sustained multiple stab wounds to his upper chest. Argueta later succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead at 11:26am.  38-year-old inmate Jacob Castro, has been named as a suspect and is being held in the Salinas Valley State Prison’s Administrative Investigation Unit as the incident is investigated. King City man is found guilty and sentenced for domestic assault

Monterey County District Attorney Dean D. Flippo announced on Tuesday, February 13 that a Monterey County jury found 35-year-old Abraham Garcia Rodriguez of King City, guilty of domestic battery after a week-long trial. On July 16, 2017, the defendant became angry with his wife, Jane Doe, after she left their home without his permission. The defendant waited for her return at their assigned carport and slapped her upon arrival. Jane Doe called 911 and reported this, then told officers again of the assault when they arrived and interviewed her.  Judge Thomas Wills sentenced the defendant to 30 days in the Monterey County Jail and placed him on probation for 3 years.  Detective Joshue Partida and Officer Jace Bernal of the King City Police Department investigated.

King City City Council moves forward with CCA Program and purchasing property in downtown

The King City City Council on Tuesday night, February 13 agreed at their regular meeting at City Hall to move forward with a CCA Program. City Manager Steven Adams says that the Community Choice Aggregation Program will give King City the chance to be a power provider for the city. However, PG&E will still transmit all of the power. This program will allow King City to bring in revenue that will benefit the community such as charging lower rates, providing street lights, possibly buying a solar power plant along with purchasing solar panels on low income households. The King City City Council also approved a purchase and sale agreement to buy property on the 300 block of Broadway so that they can construct a new downtown plaza. Adams is very excited about this project, but stated that it's going to take some time to receive funding to begin the work and added that the purpose of this new downtown plaza will be to attract more people and businesses to the area. 

Trash can fire knocked down at Paso Robles residence

PASO ROBLES, CA – At approximately 7:48pm on Sunday night, February 11 the Paso Robles Department of  Emergency Services responded to a residence on Angus Street for a reported trash can  fire that had been extinguished by the resident. The initial crew reported heavy smoke coming from attic vents above the garage area and  a structure fire response was initiated. Firefighters were able to contain the fire to 1  garage wall and the attic space above the garage, limiting the heat and smoke damage  throughout the residence.  The residence was occupied at the time of the fire. No firefighters or community  members were injured.  2 fire engines and 1 Battalion Chief from Paso Robles responded. Under the City’s  automatic aid agreements, 1 fire engine and 1 Battalion Chief from CAL FIRE/SLO County, 1 fire engine from Templeton Fire and 1 fire engine from Atascadero Fire immediately responded. 7th Infantry Division at Fort Hunter Liggett are busy training

Fort Hunter Liggett and the 7th Infantry Division hosted a Bayonet Focus Exercise Media Day on Monday, February 12. The day began with a ceremony that involved changing the name of the post chapel to the Lightfighters Chapel in honor of the 7th  Infantry Division. After the ceremony members of the media observed soldier engagement in training areas with tanks, helicopters and other vehicles. The 7th Infantry Division has been training at Fort Hunter Liggett for over a week and will be relocating very soon to do more work at the National Training Center in Fort Irwin, California. This the 1st time soldiers from the 7th Infantry Division have been training at Fort Hunter Liggett since 1994.  

Kids enjoy phase 1 completion of Gonzales Skate Park

A lot of kids and some adults were on hand for a grand re-opening celebration of phase 1 of a new skate park in Gonzales on Saturday, February 10. The work for this project was funded by taxpayers through a Measure K tax initiative at a cost of $75,000. Work on phase 2 of the Gonzales skate park is expected to begin sometime before the end of the year.

Sol Treasures in King City hosted an Artists meet and greet event on Friday, February 9. Artists in King City and throughout the Salinas Valley attended the festivities to show off their art, photography and other pieces of work for the public to view.

Suspect at large in Paso Robles stabbing

PASO ROBLES, CA – On Sunday, February 11, 2018 at approximately 1:40 PM, the  Paso Robles Police Department received a report of 2 males involved in a physical  fight in the 3100 block of Spring Street. Upon arrival, officers located one male adult victim  with an apparent stab wound to his lower left back. The adult male suspect left in a  vehicle prior to officers’ arrival.  The 30-year-old victim was transported by ambulance to a local hospital with wounds  that do not appear to be life threatening. During the investigation officers learned the  victim and suspect are related and that this was an isolated incident.  The suspect has been identified as 36-year-old Paso Robles resident Samuel Joel  Maduena, described as a Hispanic male adult, 5’09” tall, weighing approximately 240  pounds with black hair and brown eyes. Congressman Panetta releases statement on the passage of the Budget Deal

Applications for fireworks booths in King City are now out

Applications for King City 4th of July fireworks booths are now available online at the City's website at www.kingcity.com under "Documents and Forms - City Manager." The deadline for submitting applications to City Hall is March 7 at 5pm. 3 permits will be available for non-profit organizations to utilize for community fundraising. If the City receives more than 3 applications then permits will be awarded through a lottery selection process. There is an application fee of $35 and a permit fee of $375. Fireworks may be sold from 12pm on June 28 through July 4. The lottery to choose the applicant will occur on March 27. For more information, contact City Hall at 831-386-5925. 

2018 Amgen Tour of California will be coming through King City in May

The entire 2018 Amgen Tour of California route was announced on Thursday, February 8 by AEG who is the owner and presenter of the race. The cycling stage will cover 645 of roadways, highways and coastlines during 7 stages from Long Beach to Sacramento from May 13 to May 19. The May 15 stage start will take place in downtown King City and will also loop through King City at full speed along Airport Road abd then north on Metz Road. King City Police Department will offer a Community Police Academy in March

The King City Police Department is offering a 12 week Community Police Academy beginning in March, which will provide participants an up close look at police work. The Community Police Academy educates community residents in law enforcement issues and best practices, strengthens safety and security and enhances relationships between law enforcement officers and the community they serve.  There is no cost to participate and registration is now open. Spanish translation will be provided. Greenfield Councilwoman expresses concern about the pesticide chlorpyrifos

The pesticide chlorpyrifos that’s used in fields to try and get rid of bugs in the Salinas Valley has some people alarmed. Greenfield City Councilwoman Nely Martinez recently wrote an article on safeagsafeschools.weebly.com and said that it can be harmful. Martinez said that a study was recently done by a group at UC Berkeley regarding kids who grew up in an agricultural area and Martinez said that this pesticide is linked to cancer, changes in behavior with children and birth defects. Martinez indicated that 2 schools in Greenfield have the highest level of  chlorpyrifos exposure. In addition, Martinez stated that this pesticide was supposed to be banned under the Obama Administration, but President Donald Trump said that  chlorpyrifos is not harmful and is now still being used. Martinez mentioned that talks are ongoing in Washington DC with DPR and scientific studies are still being conducted to find out if  chlorpyrifos  should be banned at all or not. 

Congressman Panetta addresses concerns in Washington DC about ag labor shortage

District 20 Congressman Jimmy Panetta took part in a bipartisan House Agriculture Committee hearing with USDA Secretary Sonny Perdue to discuss the state of the country’s rural economy on Tuesday, February 6 in Washington D.C.  Congressman Panetta spoke with Secretary Perdue about agriculture’s labor shortage, calling it probably the most important issue faced by producers on the central coast of California and indicated that he appreciates the actions that have been taken by Secretary Perdue to help tackle these concerns.  Congressman Panetta also asked about interagency efforts to improve the current H2-A visa process. Secretary Perdue said that they are trying to work more carefully with DHS on this issue.

Enhancing Police Community Relations Workshop draws a good crowd to King City Hall

Almost 20 people attended an Enhancing Police Community Relations workshop at King City Hall on Monday night, February 5. The workshop was sponsored by the Four Cities United Project and was facilitated by the National Coalition Building Institute. There was discussion about recognizing obstacles that prevent building relationships between law enforcement officers and residents, while personal stories were shared from both law enforcement officers and community members. The same workshop was held at Soledad City Hall on Tuesday night, February 6, will take place at the Gonzales PD Community Room on Wednesday night, February 7 and at Greenfield City Hall on Thursday night, February 8.

Water main breaks in Paso Robles

The Paso Robles Department of Emergency Services received notification from Police Officers on scene on Saturday night, February 3 at 8:37pm of a possible broken water main with imminent flooding to nearby residences in the area of Jackson Drive and Union Road. The first arriving firefighters found a large volume of water flowing from Pino Way down the hillside to Jackson Drive. Quick initial action by firefighters working in knee deep mud and water diverted impinging water from entering a house in the path. Upon clearing a simultaneous emergency incident, the Battalion Chief arrived and added 2 additional engines to the response. 10 firefighters with the assistance of mutual aid provided by CAL Fire kept water damage to a minimum. Firefighters removed water from a garage and out building while diverting rushing water from numerous other homes. King City Police responds to sexual assault of juvenile

A news release from the Major Crimes Investigation Unit through the King City Police Department reports that officers responded to a residence in the 200 block of Pearl Street in King City on Saturday morning, February 3 at 8:20am. King City Police Officers determined a sexual assault of a female juvenile had occurred and Investigators from the Major Crimes Investigations Unit were called to investigate the incident. The ensuing investigation revealed an unknown suspect contacted the victim at a residence in the 200 block of Pearl Street and sexually assaulted her. No other information is being released at this time, as the investigation is continuing. Investigators would like to reach out to the public for information, regarding any suspicious activity observed within the 100 to 300 block of Pearl Street, between the hours of 6am and 8:20am, on February 3. Teachers and some students at Mary Chappa Elementary School in Greenfield celebrated their 100 th day of the 2017-18 school year going back in time by dressing up on Friday, February 3. Kindergarten teacher Maria Segobia said that some of her students dressed up as 100-year-old people wearing crowns, making necklaces, cups, while she and other teachers also took pictures of the students dressed up through an online app.
