WASHINGTON, DC – On Thursday, September 17 Congressman Jimmy Panetta (D-Carmel Valley) announced the distribution of over $1 million in federal government grants for UC Santa Cruz research programs. The University was awarded a $736,839 grant for human genome research in addition to a $308,000 grant to improve its Xena program on cancer genomics research.
“UC Santa Cruz offers renowned, innovative research opportunities to students and faculty on the Central Coast. I am proud to announce this investment to strengthen the university’s critical work and drive research on the human genome and cancer,” said Congressman Panetta. “I will continue my work to secure funding for scientific and medical research in our district to save lives, create jobs, and strengthen our local economy.”
The Department of Health and Human Services Grant will be used for end-to-end human genome assembly research. Earlier this year, UC Santa Cruz researchers published an article regarding such research and its transformative impact on human genome assembly. The additional DHHS grant will be used to integrate new data into the UCSC Xena program. Xena is an online exploration tool for researchers to visualize and interpret cancer genomics data.
