Panetta Participates in Hearing to Urge the Senate to Vote on Background Checks

On Tuesday, September 10 District 20 Congressman Jimmy Panetta, whose district includes a portion of the City of Gilroy, participated in the House Gun Violence Prevention Task Force’s Forum on the Urgent Need for Senate Action.  He was joined by dozens of colleagues in criticizing the Senate’s and White House’s inaction on gun violence, and urging the Senate to vote on bipartisan House-passed background checks bills.
At the hearing, members of Congress asked witnesses questions to highlight the need for action on gun safety legislation.  Witnesses present at ghe Tuesday, September 10 hearing were:
Ret. Chief Daniel Isom – Former Chief of Police for the St. Louis Metropolitan Police Department
Vic Bencomo – 22-year Navy veteran, gun owner, and member of Colorado Gun Owners for Safety
The Honorable Christine Hunschofsky – Mayor of Parkland
Dr. Joseph Sakran – Trauma surgeon and gun violence survivor from Baltimore
Ariel Hobbs – Student member of the March for Our Lives Board of Directors from Texas
"Today, I heard powerful testimony from witnesses about the impact of gun violence on communities across the country," said Congressman Panetta, a member of the House Gun Violence Prevention Task Force.  "It has been 195 days since we in the House passed background checks legislation.  It is well past time for the Senate to step up and do their job and act on these bills."
In February, the House of Representatives passed H.R. 8, the Bipartisan Background Checks Act of 2019 and H.R. 1112, the Enhanced Background Checks Act.  Following the July 28 mass shooting in Gilroy, California, Congressman Panetta sent a letter urging Senator McConnell to allow a vote on a pair of House-passed and bipartisan background check bills.
